🌿 What’s Happening with the Chuburná Dunes and what is the controversy and environmental impact?
You may have seen people sharing a petition to protect the Chuburná Dunes in Yucatán and flyers about the demonstration tonight at 6pm at the Monumento de la Patria. Here’s what it’s about.
IMPORTANCE OF THE DUNES
The Chuburná Dunes are considered one of Yucatán’s most important coastal ecosystems. They provide habitat for protected species—including the endemic Yucatán Wren, the Mexican Sheartail hummingbird, and nesting hawksbill and green sea turtles—while also helping protect the coastline from erosion, flooding, hurricanes, and storm surges.
REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT
The petition was created in response to concerns over real estate development in the area. Those behind the campaign are asking municipal, state, and federal authorities to ensure that any proposed projects undergo rigorous environmental review, comply with Mexican environmental laws, and do not cause irreversible damage to the dunes, surrounding mangroves, or wildlife habitat.
Coastal dunes take decades to recover if disturbed and play a critical role in protecting both biodiversity and nearby communities.
At this stage, the petition and tonight’s demonstration reflects the concerns of conservation advocates. As with any proposed development, the final outcome will depend on the environmental studies, permitting process, and decisions made by the appropriate authorities.
