What are the benefits of slugging?

Slugging acts as an occlusive, meaning that the thin layer of petrolatum forms a sort of protective barrier on the skin.

Slugging works by repairing the skin by keeping the skin barrier intact and minimizing the trans-epidermal water loss by trapping moisture.

Who is suitable for slugging?

You may be a good fit for slugging if you have conditions that make you prone to dry skin (like eczema and rosacea). Those with rosacea that have red, dry, and irritated skin could see benefits from slugging. Slugging is not a good idea for people with papulopustular rosacea, which is more like acne-prone skin.

What product should you use for slugging?

Dr. Kassouf says that if you're going to try slugging, make sure you're using pure petroleum jelly (Vaseline®) or petroleum jelly with only minimal additional ingredients, like Aquaphor® and CeraVe®.
