“Doctor, can I please not have this baby tonight?” 😂

This is a true story.

I was still an intern when I was posted to Obstetrics. That night, I was on duty in the delivery room. And that day happened to be the 14th day of the seventh lunar month.

That evening, a Chinese mother was wheeled into the delivery room. Her water had broken, her contractions were getting stronger, and the baby was clearly on the way.

The moment she saw that I was Chinese, she asked me, very anxiously:
“Doctor, can I please not have this baby tonight?”

I froze. Huh?

The baby’s already on the way out, and now she’s asking me if she can… not have it?

While I was still trying to process what she meant, she said, very seriously:
“Tonight the gates of hell are wide open!”
“I don’t want my baby to be born tonight.”
“Doctor, can’t you do something? Can you slow him down?”

That’s when it clicked.

She was worried the baby would be born on the 14th day of the seventh lunar month. And what made it even harder to keep a straight face was what she said next:
“My in-laws are definitely going to be upset…”

I was still just an intern back then. Of course, I knew that when a baby decides to arrive, it’s not exactly up to the doctor. But looking at this anxious mother, I could hardly say:
“Sorry, you’ll have to tell the baby to wait until tomorrow.”

So all I could do was reassure her, as sincerely as I could:
“Try not to worry, Mama. We’ll take good care of you and your baby.”

As for when the baby actually decided to show up…that was never something a doctor could arrange.

In the end, the baby was born safely.

Whether it was still the 14th or not…Honestly, I don’t remember anymore. But I’ve never forgotten the look on that mother’s face.It was after that day that I slowly understood something.

What a patient brings to a doctor is never just a medical problem. Sometimes, it’s the traditions she grew up believing in, the expectations of her family, and a worry in her heart that she can’t quite put down.

Medicine can tell us what science says. But respecting someone’s beliefs doesn’t mean you have to share them.

Helping someone feel at ease while still doing what needs to be done medically - those two things can happen at the same time.

Of course…if the baby really had decided to arrive that night, on the 14th..there wasn’t much we could do except say:
“Welcome to the world. Right on schedule.” 😂

“Natural” doesn’t always mean safe.
Especially when it’s taken together with medication.

Worth sharing with your parents or anyone who takes supplements. ❤️

"Saya Makan Semua Sekali, Doktor. Senang.”

Sekali gus. Senang.”

Saya diam sekejap.

Ginkgo biloba...Saya dah beberapa kali jumpa pesakit yang mengambilnya bersama aspirin tanpa sedar bahawa kombinasi ini boleh meningkatkan risiko pendarahan.

Saya tanya siapa yang jual.

“Kawan lama, Doktor. Dah kenal 20 tahun. Dia kata semua ni natural. Bagus untuk ingatan, bagus untuk peredaran darah.”

Saya cuba terangkan.

Kadang-kadang saya tertanya-tanya…

“I’m here too.”❤️

“I’m here too.”❤️

“Mum, I’m Here Too.”

Today, a mother brought her daughter to see me.

She showed me a drawing. There were four people in it: a father, a mother, a little boy, and a girl. The girl was standing alone in the corner, with no expression on her face.

“That’s my daughter,” the mother said. “I found this drawing in her school bag, and it really worried me.”

Her son has autism. Over the years, much of the family’s life has revolved around him — therapy, appointments, emotional meltdowns, and the many challenges at school. The parents have been doing everything they can to hold things together.

And the older sister has always been the “good” one. Quiet, understanding, rarely complaining, and hardly asking for anything. Perhaps she knows that her little brother needs more of Mum and Dad.

But that day, I kept looking at the girl standing in the corner of the drawing. All alone. And she had drawn herself smaller than everyone else.

I couldn’t help but wonder: When one child needs so much of you, what happens to the quiet child who needs you too?

No one has done anything wrong. The parents are already doing their best, and her little brother is not to blame.

But perhaps this drawing is simply a gentle reminder:

We may not always be able to give every child the same amount of time, but we can still make each of them feel equally loved.

Sometimes, it doesn’t take much.

Ten minutes together.
A short walk.
A hug.
Holding her hand.

Or simply asking, every day:

“How was your day?”
“Is there anything you want to tell Mum and Dad?”

I don’t think she wants her parents to love her brother any less.

She just hopes that while Mum and Dad are busy caring for him, there is still a little space in their hearts for her too.

A space that tells her:

“I’m here too.”

And that Mum and Dad still see her.

You matter.

You always have. ❤️

👻 Doctors Believe in Ghosts Too?

Today, an aunty suddenly asked me a very serious question: "Doctor, do you believe in ghosts?"

Without even thinking, I said, "Of course."
She looked genuinely surprised. "Really?! I thought doctors don't believe in these things!"

I laughed and told her, "Doctors are human too. It's perfectly normal to have our own beliefs, as long as we don't become overly superstitious."

She nodded, then leaned a little closer and lowered her voice.
“Doctor... when you used to work in the hospital, did you ever see a ghost?"

Hmm. I thought about it for a moment. "Luckily, no." 😂

Back when I used to do oncall in the hospital, walking around at 2, 3, or 4 in the morning was completely normal. Some nights, after working for hours, I was honestly too exhausted to be scared of anything.

There was a small room where we could rest, and the mortuary was just nearby. When I first found out, I remember thinking, "Har? The mortuary is right there?"
But whatever lah. If there's a bed, I'm sleeping. Lights off, blanket on.

Any strange noises outside? Don't know.
Anything "else" nearby? Don't know.
There was only one thought in my head: please, don't let anyone call me.

Because the scariest thing about a hospital night shift was never a ghost.
It was finally falling asleep at 3 a.m. and suddenly someone bursts through the door: "DOCTOR! The patient has no heartbeat!"

Ghost? What ghost?
Ghost Month? What Ghost Month?
Put on your shoes and RUN!

So if you ask me, "Doctor, weren't you scared of seeing a ghost during night shifts?" all I can say is, if a ghost appeared, I'm not sure whether I'd run.
But if a nurse shouted "DOCTOR!" at 3 a.m., I would definitely run. 😂

Happy Ghost Month.
Respect tradition, respect different beliefs.

And to all my fellow doctors on call this Ghost Month, may your nights be peaceful, your calls be few, and your biggest wish come true: "Please, no Code Blue tonight."
