🧬 NAD+ & Cellular Stress: More Than Just Energy
NAD+ is more than an energy molecule.
We often discuss NAD+ in the context of mitochondrial energy production.
But its biology goes much further.
NAD+ also participates in cellular responses involving:
🔄 Redox balance
🧬 DNA damage and repair
🧪 Metabolic regulation
📡 Cellular signalling
🛡️ Stress-response pathways
One reason is that NAD+ is not only a redox cofactor. It is also consumed as a substrate by enzymes such as sirtuins and PARPs, linking NAD+ metabolism to cellular signalling and responses to stress.
This means that changes in NAD+ availability can influence different cellular processes and the effects may depend on where NAD+ is located, how much is available, and which pathways are active.
So perhaps the better way to think about NAD+ is:
Not simply “cellular fuel.”
But part of the cell’s response network.
And that complexity is exactly what makes NAD+ biology so interesting.
