​Ending my last on-call shift before my short break was a true reminder of why we do what we do.

The past 24 hours brought two new admissions to our NICU alongside our existing 30-weeker:
​1️⃣ A surprise respiratory distress case in a full-term 37-weeker, likely congenital pneumonia, requiring immediate respiratory support and intensive care.
2️⃣ An early morning 530am emergency standby for a 34-week preemie delivery.

​It was intense, fast-paced, and required all hands on deck, but thank goodness both babies are now stable and receiving the best care. 💙

​Heading into my holiday feeling grateful and ready to recharge! 🌴✨

Spent close to 2.5 hours at the police station today making a statement—definitely an unusual day for a Paediatrician. 🏥

A baby was brought in today with common symptoms: poor feeding, frequent crying, and crankiness. But during the physical examination, something felt off.
I noticed a swelling on her left thigh.

An X-ray confirmed my fears: a fractured femur. 🩺

In cases like this, regardless of how genuine, cooperative, and forthcoming the parents appear, as a trained Paediatrician, it is my mandated responsibility to raise suspicion of a "non-accidental injury" (NAI) or potential child abuse.

I share this today to highlight a vital part of our role as Paediatricians: we are not just caregivers; we are child protectors.

We must remain constantly vigilant to safeguard every vulnerable child who comes through our doors.

📢 A Gentle Reminder for Parents During the Haze Period

Staying indoors during haze is a good first step, but it may not be enough to keep your family safe from harmful microparticles!

Here are key steps to protect your children and loved ones:
* 🌬️ Indoor Air Quality: Standard air conditioning does not filter out fine haze particles. To effectively clean indoor air, use an air purifier equipped with a properly sized HEPA filter for your room size.
* 💧 Stay Hydrated: Encourage your family to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
* 🏃‍♂️ Limit Outdoor Exposure: Avoid strenuous outdoor activities or exercise while haze levels are elevated.
* 😷 Mask Up When Necessary: If you must head outdoors, ensure you and your children wear a properly fitted mask (such as an N95 or equivalent particulate respirator).
* 🩺 Monitor Health Closely: Children are especially vulnerable. Please seek medical attention early if your child experiences any respiratory symptoms (e.g., coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort).

🎨 PLAY = LEARNING: Play-Based Parenting Programme 🎈

Discover how you can support your child’s development through interactive, hands-on, and fun activities!
Led by a qualified Speech and Language Consultant and her team from BOLD & ACS, this 4-week programme helps parents understand the power of play, encourage self-directed learning, and boost physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and communication skills.

📅 Programme Details
* Dates: Saturdays – November 7, 14, 21, & 28, 2026
* Time: 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM
* Location: 227 Jalan Pemancar, 11700 Gelugor, Penang
* Fees: RM 200 per child (Financial assistance for B40 families is available based on case-by-case review)

🎈 Activities & Play Sessions
Enjoy engaging activities like water & sand play, arts & crafts, interactive games, songs, and storytelling! These sessions will help you discover your child's interests and strengths so you can plan meaningful activities together at home.

👶 Requirements & Eligibility
* Children: 3–6 years old with special needs (Limited to 12 children based on a review of needs).
* Parents: One parent will participate in the playgroup with the child, while the other parent attends the parenting class. (If the child can be separated, both parents may attend the class together!)
* Medium of Communication: English (Bahasa Melayu & Chinese may also be used by participants).
* Note: Previous attendees can also enrol without needing to re-attend the parenting class. Speech therapist consultation with Ms. Chia is available if further support is needed.
