BEARy Friendly Paediatrician

BEARy Friendly Paediatrician Hello everyone. Welcome to my FB site. I am Dr Tan Pek Yong, a General Paediatrician based in Island Hospital, Penang.

My interest is in neonatal care, child nutrition, and asthma care.

29/08/2026

I was recently shocked to hear that I’ve been labeled as a paediatrician who "forces" mothers to breastfeed. I want to clear the air and make my stance completely clear.

Breastmilk is undeniably the best source of nutrition for a newborn, and I will always encourage mothers to at least give it a try. But encouraging is NOT forcing.

I fully understand that breastfeeding can be incredibly challenging, painful, or simply not working out for every mother. My priority is a healthy, well-fed baby and a supported, sane mother. I will never force you to exclusively breastfeed while watching your baby cry in hunger.

If you need advice or hands-on assistance, I am here. If we need to supplement with formula, that is absolutely fine. Fed is best, and you have my full support whichever path your journey takes.

Got my dengue shot today! 🦟🛡️

As a parent and Paediatrician, seeing the little ones down with a dengue fever is scary—and all it takes is one tiny mosquito bite.

Getting vaccinated gives them up to 80% protection against symptomatic dengue and reduces hospital stays up to 95%.

Prevention is always better than cure. Let’s keep our kids safe while they play!

Get your kids (above 4 years old) vaccinated today. ❤️👶💪

📱 **Is screen time stealing your child’s sleep—and peace of mind?** 😴

More screen time is leading to less sleep and higher rates of behavioral and mental health challenges in kids:

* 📊 **27.7%** of US children now face mental, behavioral, or developmental disorders.
* ⏳ **>2.5 hrs** daily screen time starts early in childhood—and grows with age.
* 🌙 **1.2 hrs** of sleep lost every night in high screen-time groups.

💡 **Pro-tip:** Try establishing a screen-free boundary 1 hour before bedtime to help them rest and recharge! 🎨📚🌱

Small beginnings, massive long-term results. 📊

Tracking nearly 3,500 people over 30 years revealed that longer breastfeeding duration is associated with higher adult intelligence, more schooling, and increased income.

Early health is truly lifelong wealth! 💡📈

🩺 A quick update and friendly reminder for parents of little ones!

Lately, I’ve been diagnosing more Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) in infants under 1 year old. In babies, UTIs don't always come with the obvious symptoms we see in adults. Instead, they often show up as:
🌡️ High or unexplained fever
🍼 Poor feeding or refusing to eat
😭 Unsettled, unusual crying or fussiness

Rule of thumb: If your baby is unwell or running a fever, but doesn't have typical cold or tummy bug symptoms (like a cough, runny nose, vomiting, or diarrhea), please don't ignore it.

Trust your instincts and bring them in to see your pediatrician for a quick check. Catching it early makes all the difference! ❤️
