Brown Rice Bowl with Creamy Red Palm Oil Daun Kesum Dressing ๐Ÿฅ—๐Ÿงก

Red palm oil in a creamy dressing? Yes, it works.

Most people think of red palm oil only as a cooking oil, but it can also be used in cold preparations like this creamy daun kesum dressing. It adds a beautiful orange hue and pairs perfectly with a bowl of brown rice, chicken, and roasted vegetables. Iโ€™m using daun kesum for a fresh, slightly citrusy-herbal note, but you can replace it with other herbs like dill, coriander, or parsley.

Its colour comes naturally from provitamin A carotenoids, which our body can convert into vitamin A to support normal vision. Plus, having a little fat in a meal also helps with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K.

Went to FRIM with friends over the weekend.

Only found out during the visit that FRIM (Forest Research Institute Malaysia) was established in 1926, and the area was actually once degraded land from old tin mining activities. Quite hard to believe when you're surrounded by so many tall trees now.

Today, it's a living laboratory for forest research and conservation, and also recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pretty amazing that we have this hidden gem right in Kepong.

The highlight was definitely our guide, Mr. Rashih. He joined FRIM in 1957 as a forest researcher, and even after retirement, he still continues guiding visitors around.

He was funny, kind, and a walking forest-pedia! We learnt about different trees, leaves, and how researchers identify tree species. And I also didn't know some leaves can smell that good!

The walk itself was very manageable, so it's really a nice weekend activity with friends or family.

Sometimes when life gets too busy, a simple walk among the trees is all we need.

Good air, good company, and a small reminder to slow down a bit.

If you're here in KL, go check it out!

I recently tried the Thermomix TM7, and I was honestly impressed by how it brings weighing, chopping, blending, steaming and cooking into one system.

For this meal, I made Thai-style steamed fish, tofu with shimeiji mushrooms, rice, potato mushroom soup and blueberry sorbet, all within the same hour! โœจ

Balanced meals, better portioning, less oil, and less cleaning after? Thatโ€™s a win for busy adults. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Healthier cooking feels so much easier to repeat when the process is this manageable.

One of the easiest ways to turn tempeh into something super flavourful ๐Ÿ‘€

Just air fry the tempeh together with shallots, garlic and chillies, then mash everything with calamansi juice and a little salt.

You get this spicy, tangy, savoury tempeh topping that goes so well with warm rice.

Tempeh is also one of my favourite plant-based proteins, made from fermented soybeans, with a nice nutty flavour and satisfying texture.

Simple, budget-friendly, and honestly quite addictive.

Ingredients
โ€ข 1 block tempeh, cut into bite-sized pieces
โ€ข 5 shallots
โ€ข 4 cloves garlic
โ€ข 2 red chillies
โ€ข 2 green chillies
โ€ข Oil spray

After air frying
โ€ข Juice of 4 calamansi lime
โ€ข ยผ tsp salt

Air fry at 180ยฐC for 15 minutes, then mash everything together.

Save this if you need a quick rice companion ๐Ÿš

Thereโ€™s something very healing about being surrounded by trees, river sounds, strangers laughing, children running around, people making art, cooking food, brewing coffee, selling handmade thingsโ€ฆ all happening quietly inside a forest.

Spent the weekend at ๆฃฎๆฃฎ ยท at Chongkak Park, Hulu Langat, and honestly, it felt like stepping into another world for a while. A small forest bazaar, but filled with so much life, creativity, culture, and togetherness. Food stalls, handmade ceramics, clothing, music, art, little corners for conversations, picnics by the riverโ€ฆ it reminded me how beautiful human connection can feel when it happens slowly and naturally.

One of the most memorable moments for me was joining a singing bowl session beside the river by Just lying there with my eyes closed, listening to the water flow, feeling the vibrations from the bowls and instruments moving through the body. For a brief moment, everything felt very still and peaceful.

Of course, my mind still wandered sometimes. Random thoughts, distractions still came and went throughout the session. But maybe thatโ€™s part of being human too. Not forcing for silence but learning to gently return to the present again and again.

Another thing I really loved was discovering a stall called serving Borneo dishes. I got to try daun ubi tumbuk, tuna cooked with pumpkin, and chicken cooked with fermented rice. Everything was so comforting, rich in flavour, and deeply soulful.

BUT the traffic during the bazaar weekend was honestly quite intense ๐Ÿ˜… If you simply want to enjoy the river, nature, picnic, hiking, or a peaceful slow weekend with friends and family, you can definitely come on a normal weekend too. Itโ€™s about 1.5โ€“2 hours from KL, and honestly, one of the nicest escapes from the city.

Sometimes we forget that peace doesnโ€™t always require travelling far away. Sometimes itโ€™s just sitting beside a river, eating good food with good people, and letting the forest slow you down a little.

A haircut at in Taman Desa with the stylist Iโ€™ve trusted for almost 15 years, and somehow everything feels a little lighter after that.

And every haircut day comes with the same ritual, chili pan mee at a humble little kopitiam nearby. Nothing fancy, just really comforting food done right. The chili oil is fragrant with just the right kick, the pan mee has that satisfying chewy bite, and the black fungus, minced meat, and silky sauce all come together so perfectly. Added two soft-boiled eggs too because honestlyโ€ฆ it makes everything better ๐Ÿ˜Œ

And of course, an iced teh-c to complete the meal.

After that, I dropped by Brew & Bread Cafe for a slower afternoon. Had their pear & Greek yogurt salad to balance things out a little, refreshing, crunchy, creamy, slightly sweet from the cranberries, with pumpkin seeds for extra texture. Simple, but really good.

But what I enjoyed most there was actually the playlist.
The kind of music that makes you subtly tap your feet while working. Not too loud, not too sleepy, just a really nice energy to spend a Saturday afternoon with.

A very ordinary Saturday.

If youโ€™re around Taman Desa and looking for a reliable haircut spot, good pan mee, or a cafรฉ to slow down for a bit, these places are worth a visit ๐Ÿ˜€

KL at night has this way of making you slow down for a moment. From above, the city feels busy, chaotic, alive, lights turning on one by one, trains moving through the city, traffic flowing endlessly, yet somehow still calming in its own way.

Spent the evening at ้ฉ่‹‘ Sek Yuen, one of KLโ€™s oldest surviving Cantonese restaurants. Walking in honestly felt like stepping into old KL again, neon signboards, ceiling fans, old-school interiors, the sound of people chatting over dinner. Even some of the workers have been there for decades, and seeing them still working there today really says a lot about the place.

Had ๅ‡้›žๆตท่œ‡ (cold gelatin chicken with jellyfish), ๅ’•ๅš•่‚‰ (sweet and sour pork), and ้Ÿญ่œ่Šฑ็‚’็”Ÿ่…ธ (stir-fried chive blossoms with pork intestines). Very traditional Cantonese dishes that are getting harder to find nowadays, simple, nostalgic, and full of character.

Ended the night at a humble roadside tong sui stall nearby. Honestly, one of my favourite parts was just sitting there observing people working hard, living simply, and carrying on with life quietly.

Pudu feels very different from the polished side of KL.
A little old, a little chaotic, very lively, and very beautiful in its own way.
