The secondary pulmonary lobule is the smallest unit of lung structure that can be identified on high-resolution CT (HRCT) scans. It is a polyhedral (roughly hexagonal) region of lung tissue surrounded by connective tissue septa.

Size: Typically 1–2.5 cm in diameter.
Shape: Polygonal or hexagonal.
Boundary: Defined by the interlobular septa, which contain pulmonary veins and lymphatics.
Center: Contains a terminal bronchiole, accompanied by a branch of the pulmonary artery (the centrilobular artery).
Contents: Multiple acini, alveolar ducts, and alveoli where gas exchange occurs.
