I looked my most beautiful ever this year at the 37th Selangor & Federal Territory Inter-School Chinese Dance Competition cm 1st Open Dance Competition yesterday! Months of hardwork with an amazing and dedicated group of dance members from 轻石小创, helped me to live one of my dreams of performing as a dancer on stage. And it was extra special because the competition was just one day after I turned 39.
Through this process and experience, I learnt to see myself with compassion, love and empathy. There were many challenges along the way - none of them related to the rehearsals but life itself. I broke down a few times. I even almost gave up and volunteered to simply step down and help the others shine on stage with my skills as a Bodyworker. I hated how I couldn't be 100% present every rehearsal because of the often silent and invisible battles I was fighting almost every day.
Yet the team didn't give up on me and encouraged me. They were very understanding and patient.
And it made me experience life very differently from my default of putting myself down simply because I couldn't live up to my own standards.
The genuineness and authenticity with which some of the dancers express themselves, especially among the youngest ones sparked hope in me, that life could be lived differently from my default lens of "I'm inadequate".
Perhaps this dance 《花蝶引》 or Rhapsody of the Flowers and Butterflies is also an opportunity to experience metamorphosis, not just on a personal level, but also how I relate to the world around me.
Thank you for the opportunity and experience to all the dancers, costume designer, makeup artists, choreographer and friends I made on this journey.
Now when someone asks me if I'm a dancer, I can proudly say, "Yes!"
