As cells age, their ability to maintain normal function can gradually decline. One area of research is exploring how organ-specific mitochondrial peptides may support cellular health and resilience.

Prof. Dr. Dmytro Klokol highlights research showing that different tissue-specific peptide preparations contain distinct biological components, with some associated with:

🧬 Cellular Detoxification – Supporting pathways involved in glutathione metabolism and the removal of oxidants.
🔬 Cellular Protection – Research exploring their effects on human cells and cellular health.
🌱 Cellular Senescence – Studies in cell cultures have observed effects on the development of cellular senescence, including in stem cells.
🎯 Tissue Specificity – Different organs and tissues can contain distinct peptide profiles, reflecting their specific biological functions.

These findings highlight an important concept in regenerative medicine: not all peptides are the same, and their biological activity may depend on their origin, composition, and tissue specificity.

Peptides are more than just biological molecules, understanding what they contain and how they function is essential to understanding their potential therapeutic role.

Prof. Dr. Dmytro Klokol explains how advanced analytical methods can help identify and characterize peptides based on their molecular weight and composition.

Through techniques such as MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and gene ontology analysis, researchers can better understand:
🧬 Molecular Function – What specific activities the peptides perform
🔬 Cellular Location – Where they act within the cell
⚙️ Biological Pathways – Which cellular processes they are involved in
🧪 Product Composition – Identifying the actual biological components present in a preparation

This approach moves peptide research beyond simply knowing what is in a product — towards understanding what the individual components actually do and how they interact with biological systems.

Humanin is one of the best-known mitochondrial-derived peptides.

Prof. Dr. Dmytro Klokol explains that Humanin has been studied for its potential immunoprotective and cytoprotective effects, including its relationship with cellular function and metabolic health.

Mitochondrial peptides are also involved in several important biological pathways, including:

🧬 Cellular Protection – Supporting mechanisms involved in cell survival and protection.
🩸 Metabolic Function – Influencing insulin synthesis and insulin sensitivity.
⚙️ Hormonal Pathways – Involved in mitochondrial cholesterol metabolism, which contributes to steroid hormone production.
🧠 Neurodegenerative Pathways – Associated with pathways involving amyloid beta and alpha-synuclein.
❤️ Mitochondrial Function – Interacting with cardiolipin and other mitochondrial processes essential for cellular function.
