Why do only certain fruits cause itching?

If apple causes symptoms...
but orange doesn't...

If peach causes symptoms...
but banana doesn't...

That pattern is often not random.

In fact, certain fruits can act as clues to an underlying pollen-related allergy.

The fruit may be where the symptoms appear.
The story may start somewhere else.

Part 2 of 3: The Clue

Not all fruit reactions behave the same way.

Some children react only when the fruit is raw, but tolerate it when cooked. This pattern can be a clue toward Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS).

Heat changes certain proteins in fruits, making them less likely to trigger symptoms in some individuals.

Hot showers may feel soothing during an eczema flare…
but they can quietly worsen skin dryness by damaging the skin barrier.

Simple changes can help:
✔ Lukewarm water
✔ Keep baths under 10 minutes
✔ Moisturise immediately after bathing

Small routine changes can make a surprisingly big difference over time.

Eczema doesn’t always mean food allergy.

And allergy testing isn’t always the first step.

In fact, testing too early can sometimes create more confusion than clarity.

So when does allergy testing actually matter?
And when should we focus on repairing the skin first instead?

This is Part 3 of the eczema series, tying together why skin barrier care, inflammation control, and selective allergy evaluation all matter differently.

If you missed them:
Part 1: We talked about eczema as a skin barrier disease, where chasing every “trigger” may distract us from repairing the skin itself.

Part 2: We explored the eczema flare cycle:
Dry skin → inflammation → infection → more flares.

Because in eczema… timing and context matter just as much as the test itself.

Most eczema doesn’t fail treatment…
we stop too early.

Eczema is not just about “triggers”.

It’s driven by 3 key factors:
👉 dry skin
👉 inflammation
👉 infection

If we only focus on one…
we miss the full picture.

That’s why eczema keeps coming back.

✔ moisturise the skin
✔ control inflammation
✔ treat infection when needed

And just as important—
continue even when it looks better.

That’s how we prevent flares, not just treat them.

Next: when allergy testing actually helps 👀

Here's the uncomfortable truth.

You can remove every allergic trigger, and eczema can still flare.

In clinical practice, we often don’t find a single cause, because when the skin barrier is impaired,
multiple factors can trigger inflammation.

This is why management should not focus on triggers alone. Repairing the skin barrier comes first. Parents often came in looking for the ultimate trigger which could solve their eczema problem.

The reality is, once the skin is stable, triggers matter less.

So treatment shouldn’t start with elimination. It should start with restoring the skin.

Focus on what we can control first.
