Thank you to the Malaysian Breast Cancer Summit 2026 for inviting me to be part of the faculty team and as a speaker for a session in the Patient Medical Programme. I also enjoyed listening to empowering non-medical sessions like the “Becoming Me” fireside chat with Hannah Yeoh, as well as educational breast cancer medical sessions with colleagues treating breast cancer.

Being a breast surgeon, a mum, and a breast cancer survivor, I take home with me the privilege of connecting with survivors and women facing cancer with courage and hope.

Whether we are a doctor, a surgeon, a patient, or even a politician, we all have a role and a purpose in becoming me, in becoming ourselves. We can only remind each other that we are not alone. We empower each other, and we inspire each other to constantly evolve into better versions of who we are.

A major global analysis has estimated that almost half of all new cancer cases in 2022 — about 7.1 million cases — were linked to preventable causes.

Researchers examined 30 modifiable risk factors across 185 countries and 36 cancer types, including to***co, alcohol, high body mass index, physical inactivity, air pollution, ultraviolet radiation, occupational exposures, and cancer-causing infections.

To***co was the biggest preventable driver, linked to about 15% of all new cancer cases worldwide. Alcohol accounted for about 3%.

Together, to***co smoking and alcohol drinking made up nearly half of the preventable cancer burden.

This does not mean every cancer can be avoided. Genetics, aging, chance, and biology still matter.

But it shows that prevention is powerful: reducing smoking and alcohol use, improving vaccination, cleaner air, safer workplaces, and healthier environments could prevent millions of cancers.
