SPACE DOCTOR · 002
YOUR CLINIC IS BEAUTIFUL…BUT DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?

A clinic can look beautiful.
But some problems only appear after you start operating.

“No power point here?”
“This cabinet blocks the way.”
“Why is everything so far away?”
“Why do patients keep going the wrong way?” 😅

Small things.
But when they happen every day,
small problems become daily problems.

That's why we don't only ask:
“Does it look good?”
We ask:
Does it work for the doctor?
The staff?
The patient?

Good design shouldn't just look good.
It should work.

-------------------------------------------------

Staff

SPACE DOCTOR · 001
THE ANXIETY BEFORE CHANGE

Opening a clinic is exciting.
But we know that behind that excitement, there's usually also a lot of anxiety.

Is the space big enough?
Is the layout right?
What about M&E, plumbing and air-con?
Will it meet KKM / CKAPS requirements?
Will the budget run over?
Will the project be delayed?

And probably the biggest worry—
What if we only discover the mistake halfway through the renovation?

These are questions we hear from doctors and healthcare professionals all the time.

Because a healthcare space isn't an ordinary renovation.

One pipe, one power point, one wall or one treatment room in the wrong place can mean—
hack, change, redo… and pay for it again.

That's why whenever we take on a new healthcare space, our first question is never:
“How beautiful can we make this?”

We ask:
“How do we make sure this space works — for the people, the operation and the business?”

That's what SPACE DOCTOR is about.

We'll be sharing the things behind healthcare spaces that patients may never see, but every doctor should think about before opening a clinic.

Layout
M&E、plumbing、air-con
KKM / CKAPS requirements

Today, there was no meeting room,
no PowerPoint,
and no pile of drawings.
We had our meeting somewhere else—
the dining table. 😂

When we're working on a project,
everyone takes their work seriously.

Deadlines,
site issues,
design changes,
client discussions…
So I always believe,
work is important,
but sharing a good meal together
is important too.

After all,
people are not machines.
And teams don't run on KPIs alone. 😂

Sometimes,
one good meal is enough
to help everyone relax.
Talk about things beyond work.
Have a few laughs.
Get to know each other a little better.

And then…
Eat well,
sleep well,
and come back ready to fight another day. 😂

I love working with people
who are serious about what they do,
but can also laugh,
enjoy the moment,
and enjoy good food together.

Because a good team
doesn't have to be the same.

We just need to be able to
work hard together,
solve problems together,
grow together—
and eat well together. ❤️

Designing with Empathy

I had the privilege of being invited by Monash University Malaysia to participate in a research interview for a meaningful project:

"Designing Empathy: The Role of Emotional Storytelling in Advancing Age-Inclusive Practices Among Built Environment and Design Professionals."

As a designer, this topic truly resonated with me.
For many years, our industry has focused on functionality—accessibility, circulation, safety, and compliance. These are all essential.

But today reminded me of something even more important.
A space is never just a space.

It holds memories. It carries emotions. It preserves dignity. And for many older adults, it represents independence, identity, and a lifetime of stories.

Growing older isn't simply about having wider corridors or grab bars.

It's about creating places where people still feel at home.

Where they feel respected. Where they continue to belong.
Design is not only about solving problems.

It's about understanding people before drawing the first line.
I truly believe that the best designers don't begin by asking,
"How should this space look?"

They begin by asking,
"How do we want people to feel?"

I'm grateful to contribute, in a small way, to research that encourages our industry to look beyond buildings and toward the people who live in them.

Because when we design with empathy,
we're not just creating better spaces.

We're creating a better quality of life.

Thank you, Monash University Malaysia, for inviting me to be part of this meaningful conversation.

Sometimes, changing the future doesn't begin with a new building.

It begins with a new way of seeing people.

The Bangkok bar fire felt heavy. 😔
Most of us believe accidents happen somewhere else.
Until one day, they don't.

People say:
Fire protection systems are expensive. An extra exit wastes valuable space. Fire-rated materials affect the design. Sprinklers ruin the ceiling aesthetics. Smoke detectors can always be added later.

But fire never burns slower because the budget is tight.
Smoke doesn't avoid you because the interior looks beautiful.

When an emergency happens,
nobody asks:
"Was the design beautiful?"

Instead, they ask:
Why couldn't we open the exit? Why couldn't we find the escape route? Why wasn't there an alarm? Why wasn't there a sprinkler system? Why wasn't this done properly in the first place?

Behind every building regulation,
there was once a story.
Sometimes, a life.

Building regulations are not there to make life difficult.
Fire safety requirements are not there to increase costs.
Approval procedures are not there to create inconvenience.

They exist for one reason:
To give people one more chance to make it home. ❤️

As designers, builders and operators,
there are some things we should never compromise.
Never reduce safety measures to save cost. Never sacrifice safety for aesthetics. Never skip inspections to save time.

And never believe:
"It won't happen to us."
Because before almost every tragedy,
someone thought exactly the same thing.

Beautiful spaces make people want to stay.
Safe spaces make sure they can return home.

Design creates value.
Safety protects lives.

“Daphne…你可以 repeat 一次吗?” 🤣
但他们已经练到:
先抓重点、不要 panic。 😂✨

因为在我们 team,
速度很重要。
但方向更重要。
最怕不是做错。
最怕是大家各自 freestyle。 🤣

所以我常讲:
Think. Align. Then move. ✨

----

What makes a strong team

The most important thing in a team
is not having the smartest people.

It’s trust.

A leader must give clear and sharp direction.
The team must follow SOP.
Think first, align first, then move.

Strong teams are not built by everyone doing their own thing.
They are built when everyone moves in the same direction together. ✨

Many people think leadership is about good talking skill.
But real leadership
is about making your team feel secure.
Knowing someone is leading the direction,
someone is holding the pressure,
and someone is taking responsibility.

Sometimes I talk too fast,
and my team needs a few seconds to process. 😂
Sometimes after I finish talking,
the whole team becomes silent for 3 seconds and say:
“Daphne … can you repeat that again?” 🤣
But now they are well trained :
catch the key points first, don’t panic. 😂✨

In our team,
speed is important.
But direction is even more important.
The scariest thing is not making mistakes.
The scariest thing is everyone doing freestyle on their own.

That’s what I always say:
Think. Align. Then move. ✨
