As my previous client, during the Covid times it was hard to get to be with her in the hospital she chose to give birth in, so our work primarily involved the education, communication, and early birth support at her home before her transfer to hospital.

Not here to dictate or judge. Here to share about good birth stories. In hopes that it inspires you to believe in your own body and ability. We women are all generally created with a uterus, and with that we are created with the very ability to give birth. There's no question about it.

But the one thing affecting our ability to have the most healthy natural calm safe birth, is the limitations we pose on ourselves.

And when we change that we change how we approach our preparation for birth.

As someone who grew up popping antibiotics like candy. Heavily depending on allopathic drugs as if it was a savior, it took me college to learn and appreciate the human body.
That was where my turning point was, and today I make sure I walk the talk with my children. They may not be on the perfect diet (honestly how can we in the world we live in?) I've never indulged a single dose of antibiotics (yet and I don't discredit allopathy when required) and I take pride in their immune system being strong, definitely stronger than mine, and their quick recovery to me not masking their symptoms behind ibuprofen and antibiotics.

I want their body to do the work. So that their body gets efficient at healing and repairs. Honestly their recovery is so much faster. I'm not scared of getting sick, because what we usually fear about fevers is the opposite of what their purpose is. Fever is an immune response, it shows their little immune soldiers working hard to get them back on track. So why on earth would I want to shut it down?

Understanding this made me appreciate the waves and the ride of recovery. All this is entwined in my reasons for why I chose to ****birth and motherhood the way I do.

Not my usual birth related rant. But if you appreciate these kinds of sharing let me know.

"This is very different "

How so? When the previous experience was very similar to this, the only difference was the environment. Yet, this time, she felt free to be vulnerable, no pressure and the comfort of home and a supportive team.

Hoping to change the narration about long labours, yes while 12hr labours are ideal, what happens when you missed that window of opportunity to allow your body a "fast" labour?

Wouldn't you say it is equally important to know how to address a long labour? To understand what stage of progress you are at, and not by some finger width apart baseless information, but by what you are feeling and what's truly happening.

And when you do, you'll know better what position to be in and what to tackle for progress. How to observe the flow of labour and how to know things are moving along, or when you'll need some rest again.

The other thing is to have your bag of pain management tools, and having a wider option than just the 3 medical limitations (epidural, pethidine, Entonox)

Instead of winging it during labour
Learn to manage your labour
Together as husband and wife.
This is what informed decision helps you with.

So she did it, she went 41+5 and she eventually gave birth, she was the one who prompted me before all the other 4 births, but you see how things play out.

Yes of course when labours go long, I do worry especially with how mom is coping. But when you learn how to manage through labour in their moments, you can utilize movements, pressure, positions that ACTUALLY HELP and not just bantai the walk like a duck, squat, bounce on a gym ball, all those things sound too superficial for me nowadays and I have a greater respect for body mechanics and biodynamic body system.

Labour doesn't have to be a walk in the dark, you can use the cues in your body to weave in positions that actually help baby descend and make progress more efficient.

By the way, pushing hard is not the way...

Hope you look forward to the upcoming post on the tools we used.
