🚨 Myth vs Fact: Is CeraVe being sued because it causes cancer? 🚨

You may have seen alarming headlines about a lawsuit involving CeraVe products and benzene contamination. Here’s what you need to know:

❌ MYTH: CeraVe products contain cancer-causing benzene and are unsafe to use.

✅ FACT: The concern relates to benzoyl peroxide (BPO) acne products, not because benzoyl peroxide itself is carcinogenic, but because under certain conditions (such as prolonged exposure to high temperatures), it can potentially break down and form small amounts of benzene. Also, not all CeraVe products contain benzoyl peroxide.

🔬 Benzoyl peroxide has been used safely for decades and remains a highly effective acne treatment recommended by dermatologists worldwide.

📋 Tips for using benzoyl peroxide products:
- Store in a cool environment
- Check expiry date
- Discard old or expired products

If you’re concerned about your acne treatment or skincare products, speak to a board-certified dermatologist for personalised advice.

✨ Did you know? Mohs surgery isn’t just for skin cancer.
While Mohs micrographic surgery is best known for treating basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, it can also be an excellent option for selected benign adnexal (skin appendage) tumours.
These rare tumours can sometimes be:
🔹 Located on cosmetically sensitive areas such as the face, eyelids, nose, ears, or lips
🔹 Large or rapidly growing
🔹 Poorly defined, making complete removal challenging
🔹 Recurrent after previous surgery
🔹 Difficult to distinguish from malignant tumours
Because Mohs surgery examines 100% of the surgical margin during the procedure, it offers the highest level of precision, helping to achieve complete tumour clearance while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
Examples reported in the literature include:
✔️ Trichoblastoma
✔️ Desmoplastic trichoepithelioma
✔️ Hidradenoma
✔️ Chondroid syringoma
✔️ Spiradenoma
✔️ Cylindroma
✔️ Desmoplastic trichilemmoma
…and several other rare adnexal tumours.
Every case is unique, and treatment decisions depend on the tumour type, location, size, behaviour, and pathology findings.
📍Have you been told you have a rare skin tumour or a lesion that has recurred after surgery? A consultation with a dermatologic surgeon can help determine whether Mohs surgery may be an appropriate treatment option.

In this final reel for Skin Cancer Awareness Month, we take a look at longitudinal melanonychia 🔍

A dark line on the nail is called longitudinal melanonychia — and while some cases are harmless, some may be due to nail melanoma, a potentially aggressive skin cancer. These days, patients often come in asking if their dark streak on the nail could be a sign of cancer thanks to better health awareness and it is often useful to be aware of certain features that can be red flags or warning signs.

Warning signs that deserve medical attention include:
▪️ Only one nail affected
▪️ Pigment spreading onto surrounding skin (Hutchinson’s sign)
▪️ A wide or widening band of pigment
▪️ Irregular lines or colours
▪️ A triangular shape that is broader near the cuticle
▪️ Older adults

Dermatologists may use tools such as dermoscopy and, in some cases, nail biopsy to determine the cause.

Early diagnosis can make a life-saving difference. If you notice a changing dark streak on your nail, it’s best to get it assessed as soon as possible.

Wondering if that unusual or changing spot or mole on your skin could be melanoma? 👀❓

Use the ABCDE rule to check your moles and spots regularly:

🔍 A — Asymmetry
🔍 B — Border
🔍 C — Colour
🔍 D — Diameter
🔍 E — Evolving

If you notice any of these warning signs, don’t ignore them — book a professional skin check as soon as possible with your dermatologist. Early detection makes a huge difference.
