CARBON FOOTPRINTS
The total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) produced by our actions is referred to as carbon footprint.
It includes direct emissions such as those caused by the combustion of fossil fuels in manufacturing, heating, and transportation, as well as emissions required to produce the electricity needed to power the goods and services consumed.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT...
All living things survive within their own favourable zones of the environment; thus, the environment cannot be easily neglected without care.
Although the environment can survive in its natural state, human intervention has wreaked havoc on many ecosystems. It is critical that we protect our environment so that we can continue to live on this planet in a healthy and safe environment.
Carbon emissions have a negative impact on the environment.
Reduced carbon footprints can help to mitigate these effects because the less greenhouse gases we emit, the less we contribute to global climate change. Climate change has far-reaching consequences that go far beyond warmer weather. Global warming has a direct impact on the air we breathe and the water we drink due to rising levels of carbon dioxide, methane, and other pollutants in the atmosphere.
The importance of reducing one's carbon footprint can also be attributed to the fact that it poses a significant economic threat. Several studies have found that climate change has an impact on countries that rely on their land for agricultural and natural resource production. Farm yields in India, for example, have been reduced. Similarly, the famed New England lobster industry in Maine, USA, is under threat from rising carbon emissions, with catching rates plummeting. This has a significant impact on Maine's economic growth.
Furthermore, rising water temperatures are threatening the survival of coral reefs, putting a significant strain on the economy. Individuals and businesses can reduce their carbon footprints by installing energy-efficient lighting, adding insulation to buildings, or generating electricity with renewable energy sources. Wind-generated electricity, for example, emits no direct carbon emissions.
Reduced meat consumption and shifting purchasing habits to products that require fewer carbon emissions to produce and transport are two other lifestyle choices that can reduce an individual's secondary carbon footprint.
