YES. THE ORDER MATTERS.

When preparing powdered infant formula, the water measurement determines the starting volume.

The powder is added AFTERWARD, according to the product label.

1️⃣ Measure the required amount of safe water.
2️⃣ Add the correct number of LEVEL scoops.

Now compare it with…

You place the powder into an empty bottle, then add water until it reaches your desired mark.

It may LOOK correct…

BUT YOU MAY HAVE ADDED LESS WATER THAN REQUIRED.

Why?

Because powder also occupies space inside the bottle.

This can make the prepared milk MORE CONCENTRATED than intended.

⚠️ 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐕𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐌𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐘 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐄𝐑

If you measure the correct amount of water first, the milk level may naturally rise after adding the powder.

That is normal.

Don’t pour away the “extra” milk or try to bring it back down to the original water mark.

The goal is NOT:

❌ “I want exactly this many mL of finished milk.”

The goal is:

✅ “I want the correct amount of water + the correct amount of powder.”

📌 REMEMBER:

WATER → MEASURE → POWDER → MIX

Always:

✅ Follow the preparation sequence on the label
✅ Use the scoop supplied with that product
✅ Use level—not heaped—scoops
✅ Check the ratio every time

Different products may have different scoop sizes and preparation instructions. Never assume the same method applies after changing formula.

At 2 a.m., with a crying baby beside you, it is easy to prepare a bottle from memory.

Take a few extra seconds to check the label.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐎𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐓 𝐁𝐎𝐖𝐋 𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐊.

She stared at it.

Then she remembered the iron tablets she had recently started taking.

Since then, her stomach had felt unsettled.

Nausea.

Constipation.

Sometimes, stomach discomfort.

And now this.

Her stool looked almost black.

Her first thought was immediate:

“𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐞.”

“𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐛𝐞 𝐈 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩.”


But dark or black-looking stool can be an expected effect of oral iron.

Iron tablets may also cause nausea, constipation and stomach discomfort.

So, if your stool becomes darker after starting iron, it does not automatically mean that something dangerous has happened.

But there is something important every mother should know:

𝐈𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥.
𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧.


Colour alone does not tell the whole story.

Black stool caused by gastrointestinal bleeding may look unusually sticky or tar-like.

It may also be accompanied by:

🚩 Stomach pain
🚩 Dizziness or fainting
🚩 Unusual weakness
🚩 Visible blood
🚩 Vomiting blood or material resembling coffee grounds

If this happens, don’t reassure yourself with:

“𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧.”

Please seek medical assessment promptly.


But what if the problem is mainly nausea?

Every time you see the tablet, you already feel like vomiting.

So you skip one dose.

Then another.

One day becomes two.

Two days become a week.

Not because you don’t care.

But because something meant to support your pregnancy has become difficult to tolerate.

𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐥𝐲.

And don’t simply stop without telling anyone.

If iron was recommended because your body needs it, stopping treatment may leave that need unaddressed.

Tell your pharmacist or doctor:

What product are you taking?

How much are you taking?

When did the symptoms begin?

How severe are they?

Can you still eat and drink normally?

Your healthcare professional can review the iron preparation, dose and reason for treatment—and decide whether your routine needs to be adjusted or another approach should be considered.


Perhaps another mother tells you:

But iron products are not all the same.

They may contain different forms and amounts of iron.

And every mother’s needs are different.

𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.


The goal is not simply to make you finish a bottle of tablets.

The goal is to meet your iron needs in a way that is appropriate and tolerable—while recognising symptoms that should never be dismissed.

So, if iron changes your stool or unsettles your stomach, don’t make the decision based on fear alone.

Describe what changed.

When it started.

What the stool looks and feels like.

And which iron product you are taking.

Because sometimes, the symptom is expected.

Sometimes, the treatment needs to be reviewed.

And sometimes, your body is asking for medical attention.

It sounds logical.
More powder = more nutrition, right?
But 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲.
Formula must be prepared using a specific ratio of water to powder. That ratio should not be adjusted according to how hungry your baby seems.

When you are pregnant, these words feel reassuring.

Because you want something gentle.

Something that will not harm the baby.

So when a friend says,

You want to believe her.


But “natural” only tells you where something may come from.

It does not tell you whether it is suitable for pregnancy.

It does not tell you how strong it is.

How much you should take.

Whether it may interact with your medicine.

Or whether anyone has properly studied its use during pregnancy.

What other medicines or supplements are you already using?

Because one herbal product may contain several active ingredients.

And one supplement may contain the same nutrient that is already inside your prenatal vitamin.

You think you are taking different products.

But your body may be receiving the same ingredient again.

And again.

Without you realising it.


Some nutrients are important during pregnancy.

But more is not always better.

More bottles do not always mean more protection.

And a higher dose does not automatically mean a healthier baby.

The right ingredient matters.

The right amount matters.

And whether you actually need it matters.


Perhaps your friend took the same product.

Her pregnancy was fine.

Her baby was fine.

But her experience cannot tell us whether the product is suitable for you.

Her stage of pregnancy may be different.

Her health condition may be different.

Her medicines may be different.

Her dose may be different.

Her head had been aching since the afternoon.

Before becoming pregnant, she already knew what she would normally take.

Open the drawer.

Take one tablet.

Wait for the pain to go away.

Simple.

But today, she is carrying a baby.

So she stands at the pharmacy counter, holding the same familiar packet in her hand.

It is only a headache.

Why so many questions?


When did it start?

How painful is it?

Does it feel like your usual headache?

How many weeks pregnant are you?

Do you have blurred vision?

Flashing lights?

Swelling?

Pain in the upper abdomen?

These questions are not meant to make things difficult.

They help the pharmacist understand whether this is a mild, familiar headache—or whether your body may be trying to tell you something more.

Most headaches do not mean that something serious is happening.

Sometimes, the body is simply tired.

You may not have had enough water.

You may have missed a meal.

You may not have rested well.

But a headache that is severe, persistent, getting worse or very different from usual deserves attention.

Especially when it comes with blurred vision, significant swelling, upper abdominal pain or feeling very unwell.

After 20 weeks of pregnancy, a headache together with certain symptoms may also be related to pre-eclampsia—a pregnancy complication that requires medical assessment.

And if the headache comes suddenly and feels extremely severe…

Or you experience weakness, difficulty speaking, confusion, fainting or a seizure…

The mother looks again at the tablet in her hand.

“𝐒𝐨 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐨𝐰?”

That is not what the pharmacist means.

Pregnancy does not mean that every pain medicine is forbidden.

But it also does not mean that the medicine you always took before pregnancy is automatically suitable now.

The medicine matters.

The dose matters.

Your stage of pregnancy matters.

Your health history matters.

And most importantly, the headache itself matters.


When you are pregnant, every small discomfort can feel bigger.

Because every decision no longer feels like it affects only you.

You begin to wonder:

You do not have to answer these questions alone.

Tell your pharmacist or doctor:

If the headache is mild and there are no concerning symptoms, rest, enough water and regular meals may sometimes help.

But if it is severe, persistent, worsening or unusual, please seek medical assessment instead of repeatedly treating it yourself.


So the next time a headache appears during pregnancy, do not begin by asking:

“𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞?”

Begin with:

Because when you are pregnant, choosing a medicine is not only about stopping the pain.
