🎗️As we approach the end of April, let's remember that this month is also dedicated to Parkinson's Awareness.

🧠 Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a fast-growing neurodegenerative condition marked by motor symptoms like muscle stiffness, tremors, and slowed movement. Additionally, non-motor symptoms such as pain, depression, anxiety, and psychosis may also occur.

🏥 Treatment objectives differ for each individual, highlighting the importance of tailored care. Levodopa is frequently prescribed as the initial treatment option.

🧬 An earlier genetic investigation into early-onset Parkinson's disease within the diverse Malaysian population found that 35 patients (21.7%) had pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants, with varying frequencies. The genes involved, in descending order, were GBA1, PRKN, PINK1, DJ-1, LRRK2, and ATP13A2. PRKN exon 7 deletion and PINK1 p.Leu347Pro were unique to Malays, while GBA p.L483P was more prevalent among Chinese individuals.

🌍 Today, on World Malaria Day, let's raise awareness about this preventable disease that still affects millions worldwide.

🗺️ In 2022, the WHO African Region bore the greatest burden of malaria, representing 94% of cases and 95% of deaths. The most affected are rural communities facing poverty and limited educational opportunities in this region.

🦟 Malaria is a severe and potentially deadly illness triggered by a parasite commonly transmitted by specific mosquitoes that bite humans.

⚠️ Those afflicted often experience high fevers, shivering chills, and symptoms resembling the flu. While malaria can be fatal, it is largely preventable with proper measures.

✅ Malaysia has transitioned into the elimination phase for controlling malaria. Since the initiation of the Malaria Eradication Program in 1961 in Sabah and Sarawak, and in 1967 in Peninsular Malaysia, significant progress has been made in preventing and controlling malaria in Malaysia.

⚡ However, the emergence of zoonotic malaria is rapidly growing, posing a notable public health challenge.

🩸From 2008 to 2017, there was a significant decline in indigenous malaria cases in Malaysia, dropping from 6071 to 85 (a reduction of 98.6%). Conversely, over the same period, instances of zoonotic 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒎𝒐𝒅𝒊𝒖𝒎 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒊 cases surged from 376 to 3614 cases (an 861% increase).

🦠𝑷. 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒊 is a type of malaria parasite that spreads between non-human primate hosts through Anopheles mosquitoes. It leads to infections in humans when there's contact between the parasite, vector, primate host, and humans. The first naturally acquired case of knowlesi malaria was documented in 1965 in a man who had visited peninsular Malaysia and later returned to the USA. This was followed by another naturally occurring transmission reported in 1971. The majority of human cases of 𝑷. 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒊 infection are chronic and symptomatic, although a portion can be severe and result in fatalities.

🌡️Malaysia is also at risk of imported malaria and the reestablishment of malaria transmission, primarily due to the influx of undocumented migrant workers from endemic regions. Additionally, the number of imported malaria cases is complicated by Malaysian nationals returning from employment in the agricultural and logging sectors of endemic countries.

🤝Enhanced collaboration across sectors is necessary to establish a more cohesive approach to combatting zoonotic malaria.

👨🏽‍🔬Further research is necessary to effectively address and eradicate 𝑷. 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒊 infections in humans.

🚨 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗘𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵! 🚨

💡 Did you know that Asia has the highest incidence and mortality rates for esophageal cancer (EC) compared to all other continents?

🌎 EC ranks as the seventh most prevalent and the sixth most fatal cancer globally. Asia accounts for almost 80% of the worldwide burden of EC. However, the epidemiological characteristics of EC vary significantly among different Asian regions.

⬆️ EC comprises adenocarcinoma (AC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and other rare types like small cell carcinoma, sarcoma, lymphoma, melanoma, and choriocarcinoma.

🤢 AC originates in the mucus-secreting gland cells of the esophagus and typically occurs in the lower section. SCC arises from flat, thin squamous cells lining the esophagus and is most common in the upper and middle sections.

🗺️ The greatest occurrence and death rates of esophageal cancer are observed in East and Central Asian nations, spanning from China and Mongolia to Central Asia, with almost 90% of esophageal cancer cases in Asia being of the SCC variety.

🌄 In Malaysia, among 820 diagnosed EC patients, 442 cases (53.9%) were SCC, and 378 cases (46.1%) were AC. Malays were predominantly affected by AC (66.7%), while Indians were the majority ethnicity (74.6%) with SCC.

♥️ Hemophilia, deriving from the Greek words for 'love' and 'blood', stands as the prevalent severe inherited bleeding disorder.

🧬 Hemophilia typically stems from genetic inheritance and results from a lack of clotting factors within the bloodstream, often linked to defects or mutations in the corresponding gene responsible for producing these factors.

🏥 Hemophilia A and B arise from insufficient or faulty factor VIII and factor IX proteins, leading to prolonged and excessive bleeding following minor injuries or occasionally without cause. Hemophilia C, caused by a shortage of clotting factor XI, exists but is uncommon.

🍼 Severe hemophilia typically appears within the initial months of life, whereas mild or moderate forms may become apparent later during childhood or adolescence.

🚸 Acquired hemophilia is an uncommon condition compared to its congenital form. It's defined by the presence of autoantibodies against Factor VIII that do not fix complement.

🩺 Approximately 50% of cases of acquired hemophilia are linked to other underlying medical conditions such as pregnancy (including the postpartum period), solid tumors, autoimmune disorders (such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjogren's syndrome), lymphoproliferative malignancies, skin disorders, drug reactions, or even graft-versus-host disease.

🛏️ In instances of severe hemophilia, individuals commonly experience internal bleeding, which can affect various organs. Joint symptoms may include pain, swelling, inflammation, warmth, and limited mobility due to bleeding.
