How to Open a TPN Package Safely at Home ?

TPN, or Total Parenteral Nutrition, is a special nutrition solution given through a central line. Because it goes directly into the bloodstream, cleanliness is extremely important.

Before opening any TPN package:

✅ Wash hands properly with soap and water
✅ Prepare a clean working surface
✅ Check the patient’s name and prescription label
✅ Check the expiry date
✅ Make sure the TPN bag is not leaking
✅ Do not use if the solution looks cloudy, has particles, or the packaging is damaged
✅ Open the outer package carefully without touching the connection port
✅ Keep all connections sterile
✅ Follow the nurse or doctor’s instructions exactly

Never cut, puncture, or force open the TPN bag. If anything looks unusual, stop and contact the healthcare team before using it.
