WHY YOU SHOULD CARE FOR THE UMBILICAL CORD.

📍To prevent Haemorrhage
📍To promote drying of the cord and its subsequent separation.
📍To prevent infection of the cord.

🎈After the baby’s bath, wash and dry your hands, clean the cord with sterile cotton wool deeped in methylated spirit.

🎈Clean the cord from the base first, extending to its length using one cotton wool swab at a time.

🎈The above sterile should be carried out daily, routinely and religiously until the cord separates by dry gangrene and falls off.

🎈This happens between the 3rd and 10th day,if it was cleaned properly and free from infection.

🎈Ensure that the diaper or pants doesn’t cover the umbilical cord.

You should also observe the umbilical cord for the following:

📍Bleeding
📍Automatic dryness
📍Sepsis eg wetness, offensive odour, redness or discharge around the umbilical area, delay in separation and healing.

NOTE: ⚠️Do not use toothpaste or any other thing on the umbilcus.
