We are often quick to ask, “What hormone do you need?”

But before you jump there, there’s another question worth asking:

Does your body have the raw materials it needs to make and regulate hormones in the first place?

Because your body doesn’t make hormones from thin air. It needs nutrients, building blocks, and the right environment to do the job.

Menopause care should be about more than replacing what’s low. It should also be about supporting what your body is still capable of doing.

And this matters more than your hormones. What happens during this stage of life can also have a major impact on your brain health.

Have you ever had this conversation with your doctor?

What if minimizing disease is not only about what you remove, but what you give your body instead?

Cutting out harmful foods, habits, and exposures matters. But your body also needs the right things to function, repair, and stay resilient.

The goal isn’t simply “take something away.”
It’s also “what can I add that supports better health?”

Because disease prevention and health optimization are not just about subtraction. They’re about the right additions, too.

What are you removing from your lifestyle and what are you adding in?

When estrogen level drops during menopause, your brain feels the impact too.

Estrogen helps support brain energy, mood, sleep, and cognitive function.

Yet menopause is still often reduced to “hot flashes and missed periods.”

Women deserve to know what’s happening inside their brains, not just what’s happening to their hormones.

Brain health is not just about what you take. It's also about what you do.

Sometimes, protecting your brain can be as simple as getting outside and playing a game you enjoy.

Inactivity is one of the Dementia's Dirty Dozen, and staying active isn't just good for your body; it's important for your brain too.

You don't have to hit the gym. Walk, dance, swim, play pickleball, or learn a new skill.

Pickleball, for example, gets you moving, reacting, focusing, and connecting with others.

The goal is to keep moving and keep your brain engaged.

Your brain needs the right resources and raw materials to function, protect itself, repair damaged cells, and maintain its structure.

Sleep, exercise, sunlight, and connection all matter—but nutrition is part of the foundation.

Don't just exercise your brain. Give it what it needs to function.

Your brain needs sleep to clean, repair, and reset.

During quality sleep, your brain helps clear waste, consolidate memories, and repair itself. But when sleep is constantly disrupted, these important processes can be affected.

Aim for 7–8 hours of quality sleep and make sleep a priority, not an afterthought.

Dark skin doesn't make you immune to vitamin D deficiency.

One common misconception is that people with darker skin don't need as much sunlight. But vitamin D production isn't about how much heat you feel from the sun, it's about UVB light reaching your skin.

Melanin acts as a natural form of sun protection, which can reduce the skin's ability to produce vitamin D from sunlight.

That's why understanding your vitamin D status matters, rather than assuming you're getting enough simply because you live in a sunny climate.

Don't assume. Know your numbers.

Just because a trauma happened years ago doesn't mean its effects are gone.

Childhood trauma and other unresolved experiences can continue to affect the brain for decades and may still impact brain health later in life.

Understanding how past trauma can affect your brain is an important step toward taking better care of it.

Learn more about trauma and other often-overlooked factors in my Dementia's Dirty Dozen book.
