Hantavirus:
What You Need to Know to Stay Safe
While Hantavirus is rare, it is a serious respiratory disease that requires caution—especially when cleaning out sheds, offices, or storage areas that have been closed up for a while.
The virus is carried by certain wild rodents. While it doesn't spread from person to person, you can become ill by breathing in dust contaminated with rodent waste.
⚠️ How It Spreads
Infection usually happens through aerosolization. When rodent urine, droppings, or nesting materials are stirred up, tiny virus particles enter the air. If you breathe that air, you are at risk.
🛑 The Golden Rule: Don't Sweep or Vacuum!
If you find signs of rodents, do not use a broom or vacuum. This kicks the virus into the air.
Follow the "Wet Clean" Method:
Ventilate: Open doors and windows for at least 30 minutes before cleaning.
Gear Up: Wear rubber or latex gloves.
Disinfect: Thoroughly spray droppings or nests with a bleach solution or disinfectant. Let it soak for 5 minutes.
Wipe: Use a paper towel to pick up the waste, dispose of it in a sealed bag, and then mop the floor.
🌡️ Know the Symptoms
Hantavirus can initially feel like a common flu, but it can quickly lead to severe breathing difficulties. Watch for:
Early signs: Fever, fatigue, and muscle aches (especially in the large muscle groups).
Late signs: Shortness of breath and coughing.
🏥 Get Tested & Stay Protected
Early diagnosis is critical. If you have been around rodents and start feeling these symptoms, seek professional medical advice immediately.
