Recently, one of my โadoptedโ sons reached out, concerned about his wifeโa new mother experiencing pain while breastfeeding.
As a first-time mom, everything was new and overwhelming for her. While we talked, I found myself sharing breastfeeding tips to help her navigate this beautiful yet sometimes challenging phase of motherhood ๐คฑ
It made me realize how many new mothers face similar struggles but might not know where to turn for help.
Breastfeeding is natural, but it doesnโt always come naturallyโespecially in the beginning.
Here are a few simple tips for proper breastfeeding technique:
1. Ensure a good latch โ The babyโs mouth should cover both the ni**le and part of the ar**la (the darker area around the ni**le). A proper latch can help prevent ni**le soreness and cracks with all the agony that comes with it.
2. Hold your baby close โ Position your babyโs head in the crook of your elbow, with their tummy facing your tummy. This alignment helps them latch well and feel secure.
3. Find a comfortable position โ Sit with your back supported, avoid leaning forward, to prevent strain on your neck and upper back. A pillow can support your babyโs weight, or you can raise your legs with a footstool to bring your baby closer.
4. Let your baby finish one side first โ Allow the baby to empty one breast before switching to the other. The foremilk is mainly water, while the nutrient-dense hindmilk comes later. If you switch too soon, your baby might not feel satisfied and may cry often.
5. Seek help when needed โ Donโt hesitate to ask for support from a healthcare provider or lactation consultant.
If youโre a new mom or know one, remember: youโre not alone! Every momโs breastfeeding journey is unique, but with the right support and guidance, it can become a deeply rewarding experience for both mother, baby and fathers too ๐
