TOPIC: EVANGELISM IS PERSONAL
FOR READING & MEDITATION:
JOHN 1:40-46 KJV
[40]One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
[41]He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
[42]And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
[43]The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.
[44]Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
[45]Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.
[46]And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.
MEDITATE
Jesus’ particular attention to Zacchaeus, perched up on a tree in order to see Jesus, amidst a surging crowd, because he was height challenged, draws attention to the fact that evangelism is personal [Like 19: 1–10].
Jesus, on seeing Zacchaeus on the tree, stopped and called him down and invited Himself to Zacchaeus's home! This is yet another demonstration that, while Jesus was busy ministering to the crowd, He was not too busy to target an individual. We too must do the same.
Consider also the example of the apostles in our reading for today: “One of the two who heard Jesus speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah”
After Andrew met Jesus, the first thing he did was to find his brother Peter. Thereafter, not much was heard about Andrew in the Bible but we’ve read so much about Peter. But without Andrew's personal evangelism, who would have heard of Peter?
There are some of us who have repented but never thought it necessary to begin evangelism even to our own family members. There’s no better field for soul winning than where people know you. Continuing, our text says, “The following day Jesus went to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” “And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see” [vs. 43-46].
That was a powerful invitation and when Nathanael came, he saw and was changed! To be clear, you don't need a formal theological education to win people to Christ; just invite them to “Come and see.” God prioritizes personal evangelism. Why? Because, God created everything to reproduce after their kind. It is therefore abnormal for you, a child of God, to be unfruitful [John 15: 16].
However, it is not enough to win souls and bear fruits but that your friuts should remain. It is your work to follow them up until they stand firm in the faith. This is the reason why you’re alive as a Christian, to fulfill God’s devine plan for your life
VERSE OF THE DAY: “Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, “Come and see” [John 1: 40].
QUOTE: “You don't need a formal theological education to win people to Christ.“
PRAYER: Father, help me cultivate Andrews spirit, by inviting someone to Christ today. Amen.
