🚫 5 EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING MYTHS THAT MUMMIES NEED TO STOP BELIEVING!

Mummies, let's separate culture and old beliefs from correct health information.

MYTH 1: “Give the baby water because Nigeria is too hot.”

FACT: An exclusively breastfed baby generally does not need water during the first six months. Breast milk provides the fluid the baby needs.

MYTH 2: “The first yellow milk is dirty.”

FACT: Colostrum is valuable and helps protect your newborn against infections.

MYTH 3: “Small breasts cannot produce enough milk.”

FACT: Breast size alone does not determine how much milk you can produce.

MYTH 4: “If the baby cries, breast milk is not enough.”

FACT: Babies cry for different reasons. Check hunger, attachment, comfort and other needs. Crying alone does not prove that milk is insufficient.

MYTH 5: “Give pap or herbal water before six months so the baby will grow faster.”

FACT: Giving other foods and drinks too early can expose babies to infection and displace breast milk. Start appropriate complementary foods at around six months.

❤️ Mummies, remember: Every baby is different. If you are worried about milk supply, weight gain or feeding, let a health worker assess your baby instead of guessing.

🤱 HOW TO BREASTFEED YOUR BABY CORRECTLY — NURSE BECKY IS TEACHING!

Mummies, breastfeeding should not be a punishment. Correct attachment can help your baby get milk effectively and reduce ni**le pain.

Here is how to do it:

1️⃣ Wash your hands. Find a comfortable position where your back and arms are supported.

2️⃣ Hold your baby close. Let the baby's head and body face your breast, with the head, neck and body in a straight line.

3️⃣ Bring baby to the breast. Touch the baby's upper lip gently with your ni**le and wait for the mouth to open wide.

4️⃣ Help baby latch. Bring the baby towards the breast, chin first. The mouth should cover a good portion of the ar**la, not just the ni**le.

5️⃣ Look and listen. You should notice sucking and swallowing. Feeding should not cause persistent severe pain.

6️⃣ Feed on demand. Breastfeed whenever your baby shows hunger signs, such as opening the mouth, turning towards the breast or sucking their hands. Crying can be a late hunger sign.

7️⃣ Allow the baby to finish. Let the baby feed effectively, then offer the other breast if they still want more.

🚨 Important: If your ni**le is repeatedly cracked, breastfeeding is very painful, or your baby cannot latch or seems weak, seek help from a midwife or lactation professional.

🚨 HEALTH ALERT: LET'S PREVENT THE SPREAD OF PINK EYE! 👁️

Have you noticed people around you having red eyes, itching, watery eyes, or sticky discharge? It could be CONJUNCTIVITIS (PINK EYE).

🦠 How can it spread?
Some types spread easily through contaminated hands, towels, and other objects.

✅ How to protect yourself and your family:

1. Wash your hands regularly with soap and clean water.
2. Avoid rubbing or touching your eyes.
3. Do not share towels, face towels, or eye makeup.
4. Avoid touching another person's eye discharge.
5. If your eyes are red, wash your hands frequently and avoid close contact until you know the cause.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Do not buy eye drops or use antibiotics without proper medical advice. Not all red eyes are caused by the same thing.

🚑 Seek urgent medical attention if you experience severe eye pain, blurred vision, or sensitivity to light.

💛 THE GOLDEN MILK: WHY YOUR BABY NEEDS THE FIRST MILK

Mummies, have you heard people say that the first yellow milk from the breast should be thrown away?

Please, that is a dangerous myth!

The first milk is called COLOSTRUM. It is usually thick and yellowish or golden, although its colour can vary.

Why is it important?

🛡️ It contains antibodies that help protect your baby against infections.

💪 It provides important nutrients in a form suitable for your newborn.

💩 It helps your baby's first stool, called meconium, to pass.

❤️ It supports your baby's early immune protection.

That is why we encourage early breastfeeding after delivery, where medically possible.

Mummies, don't throw away this precious first milk because somebody told you it is dirty.

If your baby is unable to suck properly, ask a midwife or qualified health worker to help you express and feed the milk safely.

Remember: Your baby's first food is precious!

🍼 ASK NURSE BECKY: WHAT IS EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING?

Mummies, pregnant women and future mothers, make we talk! ❤️

Do you know that your baby can receive all the food and water they need from breast milk alone for the first six months of life?

Exclusive breastfeeding means giving your baby ONLY breast milk for the first six months.

This means:
✅ No water, not even small water.
✅ No pap, custard or cereal.
✅ No glucose water or herbal mixtures.
✅ No other drinks or food.

Breast milk expressed into a clean container also counts.

Prescribed medicines, vitamins or oral rehydration solution when medically indicated are exceptions.

👶 When should you start?

Put your baby to the breast as soon as possible after birth, ideally within the first hour, if you and your baby are medically able.

Feed your baby whenever they show signs of hunger, both day and night.

Mummies, remember: even in hot Nigerian weather, a healthy baby who is exclusively breastfed generally does not need extra water. Breast milk provides hydration too.

📢 Question of the day: Did you practise exclusive breastfeeding for six months, or are you planning to?

Drop your experience in the comment section. Let us learn from one another!
