Happy Friday! What better way to end the week than by celebrating the power of partnership and community action?

To commemorate World Hepatitis Day 2026, APIN partnered with the Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services and other stakeholders to take hepatitis awareness directly to the people of Makurdi.

From a city-wide awareness walk to community sensitization, health education, free hepatitis screening, referral services, and the distribution of educational materials.

A lot of people were enlightened about their status, understood the importance of vaccination where eligible, and or some, linked to treatment.

This year's theme, "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down," is a reminder that viral hepatitis is preventable, treatable, and, for some forms, curable. By increasing awareness, we are moving one step closer to eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

A big thank you to the Benue State Ministry of Health and Human Services and every stakeholder whose collaboration made this possible!

Meaningful impact often begins with small actions.

Our recent Technical Assistance visit to selected health facilities in Benue State focused on strengthening the quality of HIV service delivery through on-site assessments, mentorship, and monitoring of quality data capture.

Working alongside healthcare workers and government partners, the joint APIN HQ and Benue State team provided supportive mentorship while strengthening key service areas, including HIV Testing Services (HTS), Index Testing, PMTCT, Early Infant Diagnosis (EID), and PrEP.

The visit also reinforced better documentation, data quality, referral systems, and client retention monitoring, helping healthcare providers quickly identify treatment interruptions and reconnect clients to life-saving HIV treatment.

We go the extra mile to verify, track and monitor the progress of our clients because they are much more than statistics. To us, they are people whose futures are worth protecting.

One thing APIN does exceptionally well is invest in its people.

Following the first batch of training for our leadership team on AI and the Future of Work with the Africa Hub For Innovation and Development (AFHID), we are continuing the journey with another session for our department heads and senior team leads.

With practical sessions and group discussions, this two-day workshop is helping our staff think differently about how AI can ease system and operational frictions, support smarter decisions, improve collaboration, and ultimately help us better serve the communities at the heart of our work.

We made the news! 📰

Vanguard News ran a story on APIN's partnership with the Benue State Government to drive universal health coverage, spotlighting the official presentation of over 150 roll-up banners to the Benue State Health Insurance Agency (BENSHIA) this week.

In the report, APIN's Benue Head of Office, Enebi Achimugu, made the case for health insurance enrollment, highlighting the banners as part of APIN's Project 434 initiative, which aims to create demand for health insurance across all APIN-supported facilities and support the Benue State Government's efforts to reduce out-of-pocket health expenditure and expand equitable access to healthcare.

Dr. Paul Ogwuche, the Honourable Commissioner for Health and Human Services, received the donation on behalf of the state and commended APIN's consistent partnership in strengthening Benue's health systems.

When healthcare workers and OTZ Champions come together, learning becomes action.

Our Operation Triple Zero (OTZ) programme provides adolescents and young people living with HIV with peer support, counselling and health education from facility health workers to enable them to navigate through the realities of living with the virus and to help them stay consistent with their antiretroviral medications, become virally suppressed and even attain an undetectable viral load.

APIN’s Oyo State Team hosted a three-day OTZ inter-facility meeting of OTZ champions and healthcare workers from supported facilities across the Ibadan, Saki/Iseyin, and Ogbomoso clusters.

The meeting's goal? Identifying what wasn't working and sharing what was working across supported facilities. Everyone left with facility-specific action plans and innovative strategies they could adopt to ensure the OTZ programme better supports adolescents and young people living with HIV in adhering to their treatment plans and achieving viral suppression.

: APIN turned 25 this year. INTEREST, the continent's leading scientific conference on HIV treatment, pathogenesis, and prevention research, turned 20. Two milestones, one shared commitment: staying at the frontier of the field.

This May, six members of our team, Dr Mikhail Obaje, Rita Ayoka-Ikechukwu, Dr Chidiebele Agugo, Catherine Pius, Isaac Okohu, and Victor Ekeke, spent four days in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in sessions on Differentiated Service Delivery, Implementation Science, and Epidemic Control. They also came to the table with research of their own to share.

At APIN, attending a conference is never just a tick on the calendar. It's how we keep our programme work grounded in current evidence, test our strategies against where the field is moving, and invest in the people who carry our mission forward every day.

Dr Jay Osi Samuels, our Deputy CEO Programs, and the management team of our subsidiary, APIN Medical Lab & Diagnostics (AML) sat down with the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) this week to talk exactly about that.

Joined by Femi Owolagba, APIN's Associate Director of Laboratory Services, and Dr Abimbola Sowumi, AML's Business Development Manager, our team met with AMCE's CEO, Brian Deaver, to explore how this collaboration can expand access to high-quality diagnostics across the country.
