Our Benue State team went all out for APIN's 25th Anniversary!

APIN Benue raised over 3 million naira and conducted a health outreach at Ichwa IDP Camp, North Bank, Makurdi. The team provided free health screenings, medical consultations, medications, nutritional assessments and supplementation, and other medical services to almost 1,600 internally displaced adults and children.

Pregnant women received Mama Packs, and 50 adolescent girls received sanitary supplies to improve menstrual hygiene. Caregivers went home knowing how to prepare nutritious meals and feed their children better. Through our Community Care Management Programme (CCMP), they will also receive adequate supplies of nutritional supplements to increase essential nutrient intake and promote healthy weight gain.

The team gathered at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Makurdi, with gifts, to celebrate APIN's 25 years of impact and offer prayers for another successful 25 years to come.

As we count down to APIN’s 25th anniversary, our Plateau State team marked this special season with a meaningful act of kindness to support women, families, and vulnerable communities.

Across five health facilities, about 200 women received specially curated delivery packs containing essential maternal care items including diapers, methylated spirit, mackintosh, sanitary pads, vaseline, cord clamps, packets of blades, and delivery pads to support safer deliveries and healthier outcomes.

We also celebrated male partners who accompanied their pregnant wives, expressing appreciation for their support with gifts and reinforcing the importance of shared responsibility in maternal health.

Beyond the hospitals, food items, including bags of beans, garri, rice, and corn and hygiene supplies were donated to the Plateau State Correctional Facility, extending care and compassion to even more members of the community.

Through health education on PMTCT, antenatal care, HIV awareness, and the importance of screening, our Clinical and Prevention Team also empowered women with knowledge that can transform lives.

For 25 years, APIN has remained committed to care, compassion, and community impact. Every act of kindness brings us one step closer to a healthier, more hopeful future.

25 years in, and the story is still being told.

We started in 2001 with a mandate to prevent an HIV crisis in Nigeria. Today, we provide HIV treatment and care to over 300,000 PLHIV in Nigeria and deliver innovative public health interventions across the entire public health value chain.

Mimidoo is six days postpartum. She has stitches from her C-section, is breastfeeding around the clock, and is running on almost no sleep.

Her husband, Terna, drops their older child at school. He makes sure Mimidoo eats and reminds her to take her ARVs. He handles the chores so she can rest. He goes with her to postnatal appointments, just as he did for every antenatal visit.

This is what male involvement looks like.

When men show up this way, women keep appointments. They take their medication consistently. They recover better because they're not managing the household alone while still healing.

APIN, the Benue State Ministry of Health, UN Women Nigeria, and NINERELLA+ recently held a Social Norms Training in Makurdi, Benue State, bringing together health workers, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations, media, and community members to examine and shift the norms that make male involvement the exception rather than the standard.

45 people left that training with the knowledge and tools to change that and to improve Antenatal care, Postnatal care and Prevention of Mother-To-Child Transmission (PMTCT) outcomes across Benue State.

Strengthening partnerships remains central to APIN’s mission of improving public health outcomes across Nigeria.

As part of this commitment, APIN’s senior management team paid a courtesy visit to the newly appointed UNAIDS Nigeria Country Director, Ms. Krittayawan Tina Boonto, extending warm congratulations and reaffirming our shared dedication to advancing public health in Nigeria.

Through rich discussions, the APIN delegation, led by our Deputy CEO Programs, Dr. Jay Osi Samuels and Coordinating Director of Programs, Dr. Onwuatuelo, shared APIN's impressive footprint and achievements in the Nigerian public health space and together with the UN team identified opportunities for strategic partnerships in priority areas, including adolescent sexual and reproductive health, strategic information management, HIV service integration, mental health, health workforce development, and broader community health interventions.

To mark this year’s World Hand Hygiene Day, APIN Public Health Initiatives partnered with the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria, to support ongoing Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) efforts at National Hospital, Abuja, by donating IPC commodities, including hand sanitisers, antimicrobial hand washes, and disinfectants.

In a session flagged off by the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Dr Olayinka Lawal, we engaged with patients, sensitising them on the importance of proper hand hygiene.

But it didn't end there! We didn’t just talk about proper hand hygiene; we demonstrated it and supported patients to do the same. From live demonstrations to patients confidently demonstrating proper sanitiser use and committing to spreading the message in their own circles, learning turned into action.

Our campaign isn't ending at the National Hospital, Abuja.

Later today, APIN's Dr Abiodun Isah will join a panel of seasoned IPC experts to share valuable insights during the 2026 World Hand Hygiene Day Webinar hosted by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The webinar, themed “Action saves lives: Bridging Compliance Gaps", will move beyond increasing hand hygiene awareness to highlighting what we can do to keep our homes, communities and country protected and safe from infections.
