Today, as we mark World TB Day, we want to look beyond the word free in TB care.

Yes, treatment may be officially free. But for many households, TB still comes with a devastating cost.

A single episode of TB care can cost a household about $592 (₦828,800), and 79% of that cost comes from lost income and time. During treatment, working hours can drop sharply, jobs may be lost, and many families are forced to borrow money or sell assets just to survive.

The impact does not stop there. When adults can no longer work, children may step in. In affected households, TB contributes to school dropout and deeper poverty.

This is the medical poverty trap of TB: illness reduces income, poverty makes recovery harder, and families carry the burden long after treatment begins.

If we are serious about ending TB, we must go beyond drugs alone. We need social protection, nutrition support, transport support, and people-centred policies that protect households from financial collapse.

Because no one should have to choose between getting well and staying afloat.

Happy Boxing Day from PALCare Nigeria! 🌟❤️
Boxing Day is for love, visits, and sharing, but the festive rush can come with real health risks. More travel + fatigue = higher chances of road crashes, especially in December.

✅ Stay safe today:
🚗 Plan your trips early & avoid night driving
👥 Share driving duties / take breaks
💧 Stay hydrated
🍲 Enjoy the food. Just keep portions moderate (especially if you manage BP)

Let’s enjoy the season and still return home safe. 🙏🏽

The woman who sells pepper soup at my junction? She’s been living with HIV for 12 years. She still gives us extra fish when we’re short on cash, still glowing. My secondary school senior everyone admired? Tested positive the year he entered university. Today he’s a lecturer, married, just welcomed a baby, viral load undetectable. Chioma, my neighbour’s daughter, born with HIV? She just aced her exams and wants to study Nursing. She’s healthier than most of us. These aren’t statistics.

They’re our people. 40.8 million living with HIV worldwide many right here in Nigeria, on your street, in your family. HIV doesn’t kill like it used to. Treatment works. Hope is real. What still kills? Silence. Stigma. Side-eye.

So today, let’s do better by getting tested.
