Why Clindamycin may cause diarrhea during treatment

Clindamycin strongly disrupts normal intestinal bacteria, reducing protective gut flora that normally suppresses Clostridioides difficile.

This allows C. difficile to overgrow and produce toxins that damage the colon, causing antibiotic-associated diarrhea and potentially severe colitis.

This is why clindamycin is particularly associated with C. difficile infection as one of the major side effects.

Dear mothers, it is not a must that every child will be given 5ml of every suspension or syrup.☺️

I noticed that some mothers always give their children 5ml of every suspension or syrup they buy.

It is very wrong.

Even some patent dealers/chemists also label some suspension and syrup the same way without checking the child's body weight first.

It is also very wrong.

Listen, every child needs a different concentration of a particular suspension or syrup and this is determined using the child's body weight when necessary.

The exception is when the dose is being calculated based on the age of the child, like in some analgesics.

But in almost antibiotics and antimalarials, the body weight is very important.

From the body weight, you will be able to calculate the concentration (mg) and number of volume (mL) the child needs.

This will help to prevent over dosage or under dosage, organ damage, and improve the treatment outcome.

Every child should not be given 5ml just because it is a child or a small adult 😂

Why Is Doxycycline Less Affected by Food?

Unlike older tetracyclines, doxycycline is relatively “food-friendly.” Ordinary food or milk does not markedly affect its absorption, so it can be taken with food when needed, especially if it causes stomach irritation.

What Makes It Different?🤔

Doxycycline is more lipophilic (fat-soluble), helping it pass efficiently through biological membranes and absorb well from the gut.

But There’s an Important Catch:

“Less affected by food” does not mean “unaffected by everything.” Antacids containing aluminium, calcium, or magnesium can reduce doxycycline absorption.

Iron-containing preparations and bismuth subsalicylate can also interfere with doxycycline absorption.

In summary:

Doxycycline can generally be taken with food, but do not take it together with aluminium-, calcium-, or magnesium-containing antacids, iron supplements, or bismuth subsalicylate.

Follow appropriate spacing instructions of at least 2 hours.

A 3-Day treatment is still efficacy - says NMEP.

The U.S. CDC has recently updated its malaria treatment guidance, extending artemether-lumefantrine (AL) from the traditional 3-day regimen to 5 days (10 doses) for treatment off uncomplicated malaria in the United States.

The CDC says the change is influenced by factors including increasing concerns about treatment failures, especially late failures, which have occurred with a standard 3-day (6-dose) course. 

However, Nigeria is NOT adopting this 5-day regimen based on the U.S. CDC update. The Nigerian National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) has clarified that the U.S. recommendation is not a global recommendation and is applicable to the U.S. context.

According to the NMEP official statement, current Nigerian therapeutic efficacy evidence supports the continued use of recommended ACTs, including artemether-lumefantrine (AL), as a 3-day treatment.

So, don’t change malaria treatment duration based on social media reports. Follow Nigeria’s current national guidelines and test before treating.

Remember: To maximize absorption and minimize treatment failure, artemether-lumefantrine should be taken with fatty food or a milky drink.

This is the latest update on treatment of uncomplicated malaria according United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention U.S. CDC.

U.S. CDC extends the use of Artemether-Lumenfantrine (AR) from a normal 3-day treatment course (total of 6 tablets) to a 5-day treatment course (total of 10 tablets).

The major reason of the extension is to minimize treatment failures and resistance.

U.S. CDC also maintained that taking AR (Coartem) should be taken with fatty meal or milk to improve its absorption.

Did you know that when you take glibenclamide (Daonil , Glanil, etc) in relation to your meal.. it can matter?

Think of your stomach like a highway. When it is empty, the medicine may move through faster.

Taking it with food can slow the rate at which it is absorbed, although the overall amount absorbed may not change significantly.

👉The important part?

Glibenclamide can lower your blood sugar, so taking it without eating—or taking it and then delaying or skipping your meal—can increase the risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).

You may experience shaking, sweating, dizziness, hunger, weakness or confusion if your blood sugar drops too low.

👉 Take glibenclamide exactly as prescribed and coordinate it with your meals. Do not change the timing or dose on your own.

Remember: The right medicine + the right timing + the right meal = safer treatment.
