Another Well-Deserved Award of Excellence for Our Chief Medical Director

The Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare, Associate Professor Dauda Abubakar Katagum, has been honoured with an Award of Excellence by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Bauchi State Branch, during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Scientific Conference held today at the Multipurpose Hall of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi.

The prestigious award was presented by the immediate past National President of the NMA and current Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Professor Bala Muhammad Audu, in recognition of Associate Professor Katagum's outstanding leadership, dedication, and invaluable contributions to healthcare service delivery.

Congratulations to our Chief Medical Director on this well-deserved recognition. We wish him continued success and excellence in his service to humanity.

During the visit, the CMD was also given the opportunity to feature in a live radio programme, where he is discussing the activities, achievements, and future direction of the Teaching Hospital.

CMD COMMENDS INTER-DEPARTMENTAL COLLABORATION, DESCRIBES SURGERY–NURSING WOUND CARE WORKSHOP AS A LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENT

The Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital Azare (FUHSTHA), Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum, has applauded the Surgery and Nursing Departments for jointly organizing a workshop on wound care, describing the initiative as a landmark achievement in fostering inter-departmental collaboration.

Speaking as the Chief Host during the opening ceremony of the two-day workshop titled “Skill, Knowledge and Compassion in Wound Care,” held on Wednesday, 10 June 2026, at the New Conference Hall, Dr. Katagum expressed his admiration for the strong partnership demonstrated by the two departments.

“This is the first time I have witnessed a joint academic presentation by two departments. More importantly, the topic is highly relevant and builds on last year's presentation by the Surgery Department,” he stated.

The CMD congratulated both departments for successfully organizing the workshop and expressed confidence that the knowledge and practical skills acquired would significantly enhance wound care services and improve patient outcomes across the hospital.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Sani Abdullahi Giade, encouraged participants to remain attentive throughout the workshop to maximize learning opportunities from both the lectures and practical sessions.

In his welcome address, the Head of the Surgery Department, Dr. Jatto Kabir, explained that the workshop was designed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and skills in contemporary wound management practices. He emphasized that the hospital's strategic location in Azare, serving patients from three neighboring states, underscores the need for continuous professional development among healthcare workers.

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING COLLEGE HONOURS FUHSTHA CMD WITH FELLOWSHIP AWARD

The College of Biomedical Engineering and Technology has conferred an Honorary Fellowship Award on the Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare (FUHSTHA), Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum.

The award was presented during the College’s 2026 Career Development Course held on April 15, 2026, at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi.

The event attracted biomedical engineers, healthcare professionals, academics, and policymakers, who gathered to discuss innovations, capacity building, and the role of technology in improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

Speaking at the occasion, the Council Secretary of the College, Engr. Charles Uzor, stated that the award was in recognition of Dr. Katagum’s distinguished service and significant contributions to healthcare, education, administration, and national development.

Dr. Katagum, who was represented by his Personal Assistant, Aminu Adamu Kuda, expressed gratitude to the College for the honour, describing it as both a privilege and a motivation to continue serving humanity.

FUHSTHA DONATES 77 MEDICAL BOOKS TO FUHSA TO ENHANCE ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

The Management of the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare (FUHSTHA), has donated seventy-seven medical textbooks to the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA), in a move aimed at strengthening academic excellence, research, and capacity building.

While presenting the books in his office on Tuesday, 7th April 2026, the Chief Medical Director of FUHSTHA, Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum, stated that the gesture reflects the hospital’s commitment to supporting the university community and promoting knowledge development.

Dr. Katagum noted that the donated materials would greatly benefit students, lecturers, and researchers. He added that the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to foster collaboration and enhance educational standards within and beyond the institution.

In his response, the Vice-Chancellor of FUHSA, Professor Bala Audu, expressed appreciation for the donation, describing it as timely and impactful. He assured that the university would make effective use of the books to advance academic development and strengthen medical education.

The donation further underscores the strong partnership between FUHSTHA and FUHSA in promoting healthcare education and professional development.

Those present at the occasion included the Director of Clinical Services, Dr. Sani Abdullahi Giade, the Director of Administration, Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Kari, and the Provost of Adamu Adamu College of Nursing Sciences (AACNS), Dr. Adamu Alhaji, along with other management staff of FUHSA.

It will be recalled that on Thursday, 2nd April 2026, the Management of FUHSTHA approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the clinical training of pharmacy students from Sa’adu Zungur University, Bauchi, aimed at enhancing their practical experience.

SIR EMEKA OFFOR FOUNDATION DONATES MEDICAL BOOKS TO HOSPITAL

The Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare, Bauchi State, Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum, has received a consignment of 100 cartons of medical books covering various medical specialties.

The books, donated by the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation, will benefit medical students, nursing students, and doctors across different cadres in the hospital.

The hospital management received the donation in the presence of some members of the Top Management Committee of the hospital.

While receiving the items, the Chief Medical Director expressed the hospital’s sincere appreciation to the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation and the Honourable Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, for the generous gesture.

Dr. Katagum assured the foundation that the hospital will make the best possible use of the books to support learning, research, and improved healthcare delivery.

FUHSTHA: A GLIMPSE INTO MEMORABLE EVENTS OF 2025 (PART I)

As 2025 gives way to 2026, the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare (FUHSTHA), reflects on a year marked by significant milestones that strengthened its commitment to medical excellence and community service.
Below are some key highlights from the year:

On Saturday, January 11, 2025, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, commissioned a 54-bed Female Medical Ward at FUHSTHA. The ward was constructed and fully equipped by Dr. Musa Babayo, Talban Katagum, as a waqf dedicated to his parents.

The commissioning ceremony was graced by several dignitaries, including His Royal Highness, the Emir of Katagum, Dr. Umar Faruk II, and The Ajiyan Katagum, Dr. Mahmoud Yayale Ahmed, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

On the same day, FUHSTHA Management, led by the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum, presented Awards of Excellence to outstanding staff members in recognition of their dedication and exceptional service.

In January, the Katagum Students Association (KSA) paid a courtesy visit to the CMD, seeking guidance on academic and personal development. Dr. Katagum reassured the students of the hospital’s continued support, emphasizing that they are regarded as valued members of the FUHSTHA family.

Similarly, the Nigeria Peace Corps, Katagum Local Government Area, visited the hospital on January 23, seeking collaboration in humanitarian services. The CMD commended their community efforts and assured them of the hospital’s willingness to consider future partnerships.

The IMAN held its 25th meeting on February 24, focusing on healthcare outreach and organizational development. The State Chairman, Dr. Yakubu Bababa Shirama, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations.

ARD FUHSTHA Pays Courtesy Visit to FUHSTHA Management
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare (FUHSTHA), on Wednesday, 31 December 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum, FWACS, at his office.
During the visit, the newly elected executives of the Association for the 2025/2026 executive year, led by the President, Dr. Faruq Umar Faruq, were formally introduced to the Chief Medical Director.
In his remarks, Dr. Katagum congratulated the new leadership and reassured them of Management’s continued support and cooperation. He emphasized the importance of unity, professionalism, and dedication to duty, while offering the executives necessary guidance and fatherly advice aimed at strengthening harmonious working relations and advancing the Hospital towards greater achievements.
The Chief Medical Director also expressed his appreciation to the Association for the courtesy visit and commended the Resident Doctors for their commitment to service delivery and humanity.
In recognition of his unwavering support and contributions to the welfare of Resident Doctors and humanity at large, the Association of Resident Doctors presented an Award of Honour to the Chief Medical Director.
