Symptoms of anxiety 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Symptoms of anxiety = your body + mind reacting like there’s danger, even when there isn’t.*
Anxiety shows up in 3 “systems” at once: mind, body, and behavior. Not everyone gets all of them.
1. Mental/Emotional symptoms
This is what’s happening in your thoughts:
1. Constant worry - “What if” thoughts that won’t stop, even about small things
2. Racing thoughts - Mind feels busy, jumping from one fear to another
3. Trouble concentrating - Brain fog, forgetful, can’t focus on work/study
4. Feeling on edge - Irritable, restless, like you’re waiting for something bad
5. Fear of losing control - Scared you’ll “go crazy”, faint, or have a heart attack during panic
6. Catastrophizing - Expecting worst-case scenario: headache = brain tumor
2. Physical/Body symptoms
Anxiety flips on “fight-or-flight” hormones. Your body reacts:
System Symptoms
⭐ Heart + lungs Fast heartbeat/palpitations, chest tightness/pain, shortness of breath, feeling like you can’t get air
⭐ Muscles Tension, jaw clenching, neck/shoulder/back pain, headaches, trembling/shaking
⭐ Stomach “Butterflies”, nausea, stomach pain/cramps, diarrhea or constipation, loss of appetite
⭐ Other Sweating, dizziness/lightheaded, dry mouth, tingling/numb hands/feet, hot flashes/chills, fatigue, trouble sleeping/insomnia
⭐ This is why anxiety gets mistaken for heart problems, ulcer, or thyroid issues.
3. Behavioral symptoms
What anxiety makes you do:
1. Avoiding - Skipping social events, work, driving, or places you fear
2. Seeking reassurance - Asking “am I okay?” repeatedly, googling symptoms
3. Restlessness - Pacing, fidgeting, can’t sit still
4. Sleep problems - Can’t fall asleep because mind races, or wake up at 3am worrying
Anxiety vs Panic Attack symptoms
General anxiety : Worry + tension builds slowly over hours/days
Panic attack : Sudden surge - 10 min peak of fast heart, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fear of dying. Feels like heart attack but isn’t dangerous.
Anxiety vs normal stress : Stress has a clear cause + stops when problem passes. Anxiety disorder = worry lasts months, hard to control, disrupts sleep/work/relationships.
Red flags = get help now
See doctor/ER if you have: thoughts of harming yourself, chest pain + trouble breathing that won’t stop, fainting, or symptoms started suddenly after new medication.
*Good news*: Anxiety is one of the most treatable conditions. Therapy like CBT, breathing exercises, lifestyle changes, and meds if needed help 80%+ of people.
