Why Nigerian Women Stay in Relationships That Drain Them.
Some women stay because they still love the man.
Some stay because they have invested years into the relationship and cannot imagine starting again.
Some stay because âwhat will people say?â has become louder than their own unhappiness.
Some stay because they have children and are afraid of becoming a single mother.
Some stay because the man is financially supporting them and they donât know how they will survive without him.
Some stay because their family keeps telling them, âMarriage is not easy. Endure.â
Some stay because they have been made to believe that a woman who leaves a relationship has failed.
And some women have simply stayed for so long that the pain has become their normal.
But here is the part we donât talk about enough:
A relationship can be difficult without being destructive.
Every relationship will have disagreements, misunderstandings and difficult seasons. But constantly being insulted, manipulated, cheated on, controlled, emotionally neglected, threatened or made to feel worthless is not something a woman should have to endure simply because she is in love.
And no, leaving is not always as simple as people make it sound.
For some women, leaving means figuring out where they and their children will sleep.
It means losing financial security.
It means facing family pressure.
It means rebuilding their lives from scratch.
So instead of asking a woman, âWhy are you still with him?â
Sometimes we should ask:
âWhat would she need to be able to leave safely?â
Because sometimes she doesnât need another person to tell her that she deserves better.
She needs support, financial independence, somewhere safe to go, and the courage to believe that her life can actually be better without that relationship.
