The Federal Ministry of Health and the Gombe State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Abbott, the National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Program, and Trinity Healthcare Foundation, held a one-day stakeholders’ meeting on Triple Elimination.

The meeting focused on strengthening investment, innovation, and collaboration to eliminate HIV, Viral Hepatitis, and Syphilis in Gombe State.
In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, Idris Yanbiyu Buba, welcomed participants and emphasized the need for stronger partnerships among government agencies, development partners, healthcare professionals, and civil society organizations to combat these diseases.

The Executive Secretary of the Gombe State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (GSPHCDA), Dr. Abdulrahaman Shuai'bu, highlighted progress in HIV prevention and treatment. He outlined plans to achieve triple elimination through integrated screening in antenatal care, healthcare worker training, expanded access to testing and treatment, strengthened referral systems, community outreach, and improved monitoring through SASCP.

Key presentations included a call to action on investing in triple elimination by Dr. Mustapha Musa and a session on the national strategy for accelerating triple testing in antenatal care by Dr. Etiobhio Ehimen.

The meeting concluded with a panel discussion on financing and partnerships involving government agencies, development partners, WHO, Abbott, and civil society groups, as well as the presentation of a draft communiqué containing commitments and pledges.

Gombe Advances Toward Onchocerciasis Elimination...

The Federal Government, Gombe State Government, and the AMEN Health and Empowerment Foundation have convened a two-day stakeholders' meeting to plan the implementation of Onchocerciasis Post-Treatment Surveillance (PTS) in the state.

The meeting with the National Onchocerciasis Elimination team brought together government officials, health experts, traditional leaders, and development partners to review progress and define roles for the surveillance exercise.

Representing the Deputy Governor, Dr. Bille Nuhu emphasized the importance of sustaining efforts against neglected tropical diseases, while the Programme Manager of the National Onchocerciasis Elimination Programme, Dr. Chukwuemeka Makata, outlined stakeholder responsibilities in coordinating, supervising, and supporting surveillance activities.

Founder and President of the AMEN Health and Empowerment Foundation, Chief Rita Aizehi Aimuiwu Oguntoyinbo, revealed that years of assessments and surveys have confirmed that transmission of onchocerciasis has been successfully interrupted in all endemic LGAs of Gombe State, marking a major milestone in the fight against the disease.

The Executive Secretary GSPHCDA, Dr. Abdulrahman Shu’aibu, reaffirmed the state's commitment to eliminating neglected tropical diseases and highlighted the critical role of traditional institutions in community mobilization.

Gombe SPHCDA Partners ACASUS to Strengthen Healthcare Quality...

The Gombe State PHCDA has partnered with ACASUS under the Strengthening Quality Improvement Health System Project to enhance the quality of maternal and child healthcare services across the state. The partnership was introduced during a courtesy visit by an ACASUS delegation led by Project Lead, Ms. Mobayo Oguntunde, to the Agency's headquarters, where they were received by the Executive Secretary/CEO, Dr. Abdulrahman Shuaibu.

As one of ten states selected for the project, Gombe will benefit from interventions aimed at improving healthcare quality systems through better service delivery standards and sustainable quality improvement approaches. According to Ms. Oguntunde, the project will support compliance with State Delivery Initiative (SDI) standards, strengthen delivery spaces, and integrate HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and other disease interventions into maternal healthcare services.

The initiative also seeks to institutionalize a government-led quality improvement model by developing training recommendations aligned with national standards and documenting lessons learned to support nationwide scale-up. The meeting brought together Agency directors and programme officers from malaria, HIV, TB, and maternal and child health programmes to discuss implementation strategies and areas of collaboration.

Key resolutions included providing institutional support to the ACASUS team, granting access to relevant documents and facilities, integrating project activities into existing structures, and establishing regular engagement mechanisms. Gombe Hosts Citizens’ Town Hall on P.H.C Reform...

The Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency (GSPHCDA), in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and Communication and Social Impact, has organized a one-day Citizens’ Town Hall Meeting on Primary Health Care aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery through reforms, citizens’ engagement, and accountability.

Speaking at the event held at the Prime Academy Event Center, Gombe, the Executive Secretary of GSPHCDA, Dr. Abdulrahaman Shuai’bu, emphasized the importance of community participation in improving PHC services. He urged stakeholders to contribute meaningfully during discussions to support the achievement of sustainable healthcare delivery across communities.

The Gombe State Coordinator of NPHCDA, Abbah Ibrahim Musa, introduced the national delegation led by Comrade Aliyu Jalaluddeen of the NPHCDA Hqrts, Abuja. In his remarks, Jalaluddeen commended the Gombe State Govt and stakeholders for organizing the meeting, describing it as a timely platform for dialogue, transparency, and collaboration in the health sector.

He noted that the forum would enable stakeholders to share experiences, identify challenges, and provide recommendations for strengthening PHC services, stressing that active community participation remains critical to achieving Universal Health Coverage in Nigeria.

Also speaking, Ms. Martha Innocent of Communication and Social Impact commended the Gombe State Government for revitalizing Primary Health Care facilities across the state’s 114 wards, describing Gombe as a model for other states in the country.

The representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Benjamin Sulaiman, highlighted multisectoral collaboration, integrated health services, and citizens’ engagement as key components for achieving Universal Health Coverage, while reaffirming WHO’s support for Gombe State and Nigeria.

The meeting featured presentations on PHC performance, reforms, citizens’ collaboration, and accountability, with participants drawn from WHO, UNICEF, Rotary International, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), CHAI, religious and traditional institutions, media organizations, and representatives of persons living with disabilities.

The Gombe State Govt, in partnership with the Gates Foundation, distributed ICT equipment and introduced a Partnership Data Management System aimed at strengthening healthcare coordination and improving data management across the state.

As part of the initiative, ICT equipment such as laptops, printers, and scanners were distributed to Planning Cells personnel, Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) officers, and Human Resources for Health (HRH) officials to support data collection, reporting, budgeting, and healthcare service delivery at Primary Healthcare Centres.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Idris Yanbiyu Buba, praised the Gates Foundation for providing the ICT gadgets, noting that the equipment would improve efficiency and speed in official health sector operations.

The Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency, in collaboration with the Christian Health Association of Nigeria (CHAN), has intensified efforts to boost readiness for the May 2026 Supplementary Immunisation Plus Days (SIPDs) through multi-sectoral engagements with religious leaders, educators, and media professionals.

Held from April 29 to 30 at Layla Hotel, the engagements brought together stakeholders including Faith-Based Organisations, traditional rulers, PTAs, school administrators, and media practitioners. The initiative aims to strengthen public trust, improve communication strategies, and increase vaccine uptake.

Health officials emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration, noting that community trust and accurate information are critical to addressing vaccine hesitancy. CHAN State Consultant, Emily K. Madina, stressed the need for inclusive participation and effective community-level communication.

Participants reviewed the state’s immunisation landscape, assessed previous campaigns, and identified gaps in communication strategies. Discussions focused on culturally appropriate messaging and context-specific approaches to tackling vaccine-preventable diseases.

Religious and traditional leaders pledged support for advocacy within their communities, while school stakeholders committed to promoting awareness among students and parents. Media professionals highlighted their role in shaping public perception, countering misinformation, and disseminating accurate health information across various platforms.

Technical sessions provided insights into immunisation data and guided participants on developing evidence-based communication materials. The engagements resulted in refined messaging strategies, improved stakeholder capacity, and stronger cross-sector collaboration.

*Gombe State Marks World Health Day 2026 with Awareness Road Show*

The Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency commemorated World Health Day 2026 with a colourful awareness road show, highlighting the importance of immunisation, disease control, and improved access to quality healthcare. Observed annually, World Health Day 2026, themed: “Together for Health -Stand with Science".

The event aims to increase public awareness and reinforce the understanding that health is the backbone of sustainable development. The day also celebrates the dedication of health workers and volunteers, while renewing commitments to ensure every community benefits from Universal Health Coverage.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of GSPHCDA, Dr. Abdulrahman Shuaibu, represented by the Director of Disease Control and Immunisation, emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing health challenges in Gombe State, Nigeria, and globally. He noted that the initiative is geared towards improving access to healthcare services and commended development partners, particularly WHO and UNICEF, for their continued support.

Delivering a message on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Supplementary Immunisation Activities (SIA) Focal Person in Gombe, Hauwa T. Hassan, stressed that achieving better health outcomes requires sustained collaboration, investment in innovation, and equitable access to healthcare advancements. She called for renewed commitment among stakeholders to build stronger and more resilient health systems.

A representative of UNICEF also expressed appreciation to the state government and development partners for their support in advancing health goals in Gombe State and Nigeria at large. A major highlight of the event was community outreach activities in selected areas, including Hamadu-Kafi, where individuals, community leaders, and institutions actively participated. GSPHCDA Governing Council Holds 2026 First Quarter Review Meeting...

The Governing Council of the Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency (GSPHCDA) has convened its first-quarter board meeting for 2026, reviewing activities carried out between January and March while outlining key strategic priorities for the months ahead.

The meeting, held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the Agency’s Data Control Room, provided a comprehensive assessment of operational performance during the first quarter. Deliberations also focused on policy direction, programme implementation, quality healthcare service delivery, and community engagement.

Council members, led by the Board Chairman, Dr. Ahmed Ya’u Kashere, alongside the Executive Secretary of the Agency, Dr. Abdulrahman Shuai’bu who also serves as Secretary of the Council reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration between the Agency’s management, the Gombe State Government, and the Governing Council. This, they noted, is essential for improving primary healthcare delivery and achieving institutional goals.

The meeting commenced with the adoption of the minutes from the last quarter of 2025, followed by a review of action points from previous resolutions. The Council also mandated its subcommittees to develop detailed activity work plans within two weeks in preparation for a follow-up tour across the eleven Local Government Areas of the state.

The session concluded with an adjournment, with plans to reconvene at the end of the second quarter as the Council sustains momentum toward its long-term healthcare objectives.
