1. What is Lenacapavir (LEN)?
Lenacapavir (LEN) is a new long-acting injectable medicine that helps prevent HIV infection.
It is a form of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), meaning it is taken before exposure to HIV to reduce the risk of infection.
One injection protects a person for six months, making it easier to stay protected.
2. Who is eligible?
LEN is intended for HIV-negative people who are at substantial risk of acquiring HIV. These include:
People with an HIV-positive s*xual partner who is not virally suppressed or whose viral status is unknown.
Individuals with multiple s*xual partners.
S*x workers.
Men who have s*x with men.
Transgender people at risk of HIV.
People who inject drugs and share injecting equipment.
Adolescent girls and young women and young people at increased risk of HIV infection.
Anyone assessed by a trained health worker to be at substantial risk of HIV.
3. Who is NOT eligible?
People who are HIV positive.
Anyone who has not first undergone HIV testing and been confirmed HIV negative.
Individuals who do not meet the eligibility assessment by a health worker.
4. Benefits of LEN
Provides protection for six months with one injection.
Highly effective in preventing HIV when taken correctly.
Eliminates the need to take a pill every day.
Convenient, discreet and easy to maintain.
Expands the range of HIV prevention choices available in Nigeria
5. Important facts
LEN does not cure HIV.
LEN does not treat HIV infection.
LEN does not protect against s*xually transmitted infections (STIs) or prevent pregnancy.
Continue using condoms to protect against STIs and unintended pregnancies.
6. Before receiving LEN
A health worker will:
Test you for HIV.
Assess your risk of HIV infection.
Discuss whether LEN is the right HIV prevention option for you.
Provide counselling on HIV prevention.
7. Continue protecting yourself
Even when using LEN:
Practice safer s*x.
Use condoms consistently and correctly
Get regular HIV testing as advised.
Seek medical advice if you think you have been exposed to HIV.
