COMMONEST TYPES OF CANCER IN NIGERIA

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Nigeria, accounting for 25.3% of all cancer cases, followed by prostate cancer at 14.1%, and cervical cancer at 10.7%. These three types of cancer are the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the country, with breast cancer being the leading cause of cancer deaths among women .

*Breast Cancer
- *Symptoms*: Lump or swelling in the breast, changes in breast shape or size, ni**le discharge or retraction
- *Prevention/Screening*: Monthly self-exams, annual clinical exams, mammograms (40+ years)
- *Awareness*: Pink October (October), but awareness is key year-round!

*Prostate Cancer
- *Symptoms*: Difficulty urinating, weak urine flow, frequent urination, blood in urine/semen
- *Prevention/Screening*: PSA tests (40+ years for high-risk men), digital re**al exams
- *Awareness*: Regular check-ups, discuss risk factors with a doctor

*Cervical Cancer
- *Symptoms*: Abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, pain during s*x
- *Prevention/Screening*: HPV vaccination (9-26 years), Pap smear (21+ years), HPV DNA testing
- *Awareness*: Get vaccinated, regular screenings, safe s*x practices

*General Tips
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle (diet, exercise, no smoking)
- Know your family history
- Regular check-ups and screenings

The Menace of Drug Abuse in Nigeria today

Drug abuse is a serious issue in Nigeria, with approximately 14.3 million people, or 14.4% of the population aged 15-64, involved in drug abuse, exceeding the global average of 5.5% .

*Commonly Abused Substances:*

- _Cannabis_: Most commonly abused substance, with an estimated 10.6 million users
- _Pharmaceutical Opioids_: Tramadol and codeine-based cough syrups, with about 7 million users
- _Amphetamine_: Widely abused, especially among youths
- _Co***ne_ and _He**in_: Also prevalent, often linked to trafficking

*Consequences:*

- Mental health problems
- Social instability
- Economic burdens
- Increased crime rates
- Health risks, including overdose and HIV transmission

*Government Efforts:*

- National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seizes illicit drugs and arrests traffickers
- War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative
- Rehabilitation programs for addicts


*Recommendations:*

- _Education and Awareness_: Integrate substance abuse education into school curricula
- _Community Engagement_: Organize outreach programs and campaigns
- _Policy Advocacy_: Strengthen laws and enforcement

1.Drink plenty of water,at least 8 glasses to prevent dehydration .
2.Cover your nose and mouth with mask or towels when it's dusty.
3.Avoid or reduce outdoor activities especially is you have allergies.
4.Wash your eyes regularly to avoid red eye, common during harmattan.
5.Maintain cleanliness to avoid germs and bacteria carried by wind and dust.
6.Eat healthy as fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of minerals and multivitamins.Fruit can fights infections and build immunity.
6.Dress for protection by wearing light clothing during the heat and Cardigan during the cold mornings and nights.

Common ailments to look out for.
Harmattan is a season in Nigeria experience between late till March.It is marked by low rainfall causing low humidity and felt as dry air during breathing . Harmattan is characterized by dry wind and dust,the early morning comes with fog and haze which clears off as the day progresses and replaced by hot sun and very dry air,the night is usually cold due to low atmospheric pressure .
Harmattan comes with a lot of illnesses .
1.HEADACHE:This comes as a result of being in the sun for a long time with covering the head.It could also be because of increased body temperature and weakness of the body.
2.CATARRH: marked by blocked nose,frequent clearing of nose, itching in the throat
3.COUGH:which tends to follow catarrh, shortness of breath,sore throat due to dry air.It can also cause headaches and fever.
4.ALLERGIES:Pollen and dust particles are usually suspended in the air during harmattan there making asthma and conjunctivitis recurrent and disturbing.
DEHYDRATION:Due to low humidity and dry air ,it is easy to get dehydrated.it can also be caused by other illnesses of the harmattan.
Other things to expect are chapped lips,dry ing of throat, cracked soles of the feet and dry skin.
