Typhoid is not always “just a fever.” If left untreated or treated improperly, it can lead to serious complications like intestinal perforation (a hole in the intestine), which may require emergency surgery—as seen in this operation.

How to prevent typhoid:
• Drink only clean, safe water.
• Wash your hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet.
• Eat properly cooked food and avoid contaminated street food.
• Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly.
• Get vaccinated if you’re at high risk or traveling to an area where typhoid is common.
Note•If you have a persistent fever, don’t self-medicate—see a healthcare provider early and complete any prescribed antibiotics.

Early treatment can save you from life-threatening complications. Prevention is always better than surgery. 💙🩺

Drug Abuse

Drug abuse is the harmful or inappropriate use of drugs, medications, or other substances in a way that affects a person's physical health, mental health, social life, or ability to function normally. It may involve using illegal drugs, misusing prescription medicines, or excessive use of substances such as alcohol.

Types of Drug Abuse

1. Prescription Drug Abuse

Misuse of prescribed medications, such as:

Opioid painkillers

Sedatives and sleeping pills

Stimulants

2. Illegal Drug Abuse

Use of prohibited substances such as:

Co***ne

He**in

Methamphetamine

Ecstasy

3. Alcohol Abuse

Excessive or harmful consumption of alcoholic beverages.

4. To***co and Ni****ne Abuse

Excessive use of ci******es, ci**rs, vapes, or other ni****ne products.

5. Inhalant Abuse

Inhaling substances such as glue, paint thinner, petrol, or aerosols to achieve a psychoactive effect.

Causes of Drug Abuse

Biological Factors

Family history of substance abuse

Genetic predisposition

Mental health disorders

Psychological Factors

Stress

Anxiety

Depression

Low self-esteem

Social Factors

Peer pressure

Family conflicts

Poor parental supervision

Exposure to drug-using environments

Environmental Factors

Easy availability of drugs

Poverty

Unemployment

Social media influence

Signs and Symptoms

Physical Signs

Bloodshot eyes

Weight loss or gain

Poor hygiene

Sleep disturbances

Behavioral Signs

Aggressive behavior

Declining academic or work performance

Secretive behavior

Financial problems

Psychological Signs

Mood swings

Anxiety

Depression

Hallucinations (in some cases)

Complications of Drug Abuse

Addiction and dependence

Liver disease

Heart disease

Lung damage

Mental health disorders

Family and relationship problems

Accidents and injuries

Increased risk of infections such as HIV and hepatitis from needle sharing

Treatment of Drug Abuse

Treatment depends on the substance involved and the severity of the addiction.

1. Detoxification

Medical supervision to safely stop drug use and manage withdrawal symptoms.

2. Medications

Certain medications may help reduce cravings or withdrawal symptoms. Examples include:

Methadone

Buprenorphine

Naltrexone

These medications should only be used under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.

3. Counseling and Psychotherapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Individual counseling

Family therapy

Group therapy

4. Rehabilitation Programs

Inpatient rehabilitation

Outpatient rehabilitation

Community support programs

5. Support Groups

Organizations and peer-support groups can help maintain recovery and prevent relapse.

Prevention of Drug Abuse

Educate people about the dangers of drug abuse.

Develop healthy coping skills for stress.

Encourage strong family relationships.

Avoid peer pressure and risky environments.

Participate in sports, education, and productive activities.

Seek help early for mental health problems.

Use prescription medications only as directed by a healthcare professional.

Promote community awareness and support programs.

Conclusion

Drug abuse is a major public health problem that can affect individuals, families, and communities. Early recognition, proper treatment, counseling, and preventive measures can significantly reduce its harmful effects and improve recovery outcomes.

*PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISORY*

The Institute of Viral and Emergent Pathogens Control and Research (IVEPCR), Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, wishes to draw the attention of healthcare workers, diagnostic laboratories, public health authorities, researchers and the general public to the growing global attention on hantaviruses and the need for heightened preparedness and surveillance activities.

Hantaviruses are rodent-borne viruses capable of causing severe human disease, including Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS). Human infection occurs mainly through inhalation of aerosols contaminated with infected rodent urine, droppings or saliva. Although cases are uncommon in many regions, the public health importance of these viruses remains significant due to their potential severity and fatality.

IVEPCR has noted increasing international scientific discussions regarding the capacity of some currently available molecular assays to reliably detect certain hantavirus strains, including the Andes viruses. In view of this, several international diagnostic and research centres are undertaking collaborative validation and preparedness activities to ensure robustness of detection systems and strengthen laboratory confidence.

As part of ongoing global scientific collaboration, IVEPCR is actively engaging with partner institutions through molecular reference support, technical collaboration and exchange of control materials to support preparedness for emerging viral threats.

The Institute therefore advises the following:

* Healthcare facilities should maintain vigilance for unusual febrile illnesses, respiratory syndromes and hemorrhagic presentations, especially in patients with relevant environmental or travel exposure histories.
* Diagnostic laboratories should continue strengthening biosafety practices, molecular testing capacity and quality assurance systems for emerging pathogens.
* Public health agencies should sustain integrated disease surveillance and encourage prompt reporting of suspected unusual outbreaks or clusters of illness.
* Communities are advised to promote environmental sanitation and rodent control measures in homes, farms, food storage areas and workplaces.
* Researchers and collaborating institutions should continue supporting genomic surveillance, laboratory preparedness and international scientific cooperation on emerging infectious diseases.

IVEPCR reassures the public that there is currently no cause for panic. However, continued vigilance, scientific collaboration and preparedness remain essential components of global health security.

The Institute remains committed to advancing diagnostics, surveillance, outbreak response, research and capacity development for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases in Nigeria and beyond.

HANTAVIRUS
Hantaviruses are a family of viruses which can cause serious illnesses and death.

These viruses cause diseases like hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).

They are spread mainly by rodents.

The Andes virus is the only type of hantavirus that is known to spread person-to-person. This spread is usually limited to people who have close contact with the ill person.
