The Kwara State Accountant-General Clarifies Salary Payment Process, Reaffirms Government's Commitment to Workers' Welfare

The Office of the Accountant-General, Kwara State, has clarified issues surrounding the payment of workers' salaries, reaffirming that the Kwara State Government remains fully committed to the prompt payment of salaries and the welfare of its workforce.

The Accountant-General of Kwara State, Mallam Abdulganiyu Sani clarified this while responding to concerns raised by organized labor following its July 6 2026 meeting.

According to the Accountant-General, salaries for May and June 2026 were duly prepared, funded, processed, and paid by the State Government, stressing that reports suggesting otherwise do not reflect the true position.

"I wish to state categorically that salaries for May and June 2026 were duly processed and paid. The assertion that the State failed to pay salaries for these two months is incorrect. Where a few employees are yet to receive their salaries, such cases are isolated and are largely due to payroll validation, staff verification, and compliance requirements," Mallam Sani stated.

He explained that the ongoing State Staff Identification Number (SSID) registration exercise is an approved government reform aimed at strengthening payroll integrity, eliminating irregularities, and ensuring that only duly verified and eligible employees receive salaries.

Mallam Sani further clarified that the statutory responsibility for salary administration in Kwara State remains with the Office of the Accountant-General.

"The Office of the Accountant-General prepares the monthly payroll, generates salary schedules and statutory deductions, verifies payroll data, secures all necessary approvals, and provides funding for the approved payroll before salaries are released. This statutory responsibility has not changed."

He also clarified that engaging a payroll consultant is not a recent development.

"For several years, the State Government has engaged a payroll consultant to provide the technology platform and technical support for electronic payroll processing and salary disbursement. The consultant does not determine beneficiaries or authorise payments. It simply processes the payroll that has been prepared, verified, approved, and funded by the Office of the Accountant-General."

The Accountant-General added that the Ministry of Finance continues to perform its statutory oversight role to ensure accountability, transparency, and prudent management of public funds throughout the payroll process.

He assured workers and the general public that salary preparation, funding, and payment remain firmly anchored in the State Government's established public financial management framework.

On the SSID registration exercise, the Accountant-General appealed to workers who are yet to complete the process to do so promptly to avoid delays in salary payment.

"The SSID exercise is not intended to deny any genuine worker their salary. Rather, it is a necessary reform to strengthen the credibility of the State payroll, eliminate irregularities, and safeguard public resources. We encourage all affected workers to complete the registration and other required verification processes." Sani stated.

He also called on organised labour to continue supporting the Government's payroll reforms by encouraging its members to comply with the verification requirements.

The Accountant-General reaffirmed that the Office of the Accountant-General and the Ministry of Finance remain committed to constructive engagement with organised labour and all relevant stakeholders to resolve any genuine payroll-related concerns.

"The welfare of workers remains a top priority of the administration of His Excellency, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. We will continue to strengthen our payroll processes, promote transparency and accountability, and ensure the timely payment of salaries and statutory deductions to all eligible public servants."

He reassured workers of the Government's unwavering commitment to maintaining a credible, efficient, and sustainable payroll system in the overall interest of the Kwara State Public Service.

KW-HMB Management Team Encounters Two Medical Emergency Cases During Monitoring Visit to Cottage Hospital, Ajase-Ipo

What began as a routine monitoring and supervision visit by the management of the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board (KW-HMB), led by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Abdulraheem Malik, quickly turned into an emergency response mission when the team encountered two medical emergency cases requiring urgent medical attention at Cottage Hospital, Ajase-Ipo.

The Director of Medical Services and Training, Dr. Femi Joseph, and the Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Risikat Oyewole, immediately joined the hospital’s clinical team in attending to the patients. Their prompt intervention and coordinated response helped stabilize both patients, who are expected to fully recover.

Following the emergency response, the management team continued its inspection of the hospital environment and departments, including the Laboratory, Pharmacy, and Medical Records. Staff were counseled on the importance of proper documentation, while recommendations were made to improve environmental sanitation, particularly the proper disposal of medical waste and the maintenance of a clean hospital environment.

ILORIN — The Kwara State Government has expanded its emergency medical infrastructure and maternal health services with the formal deployment of five newly refurbished, fully equipped advanced life-support ambulances.

The emergency vehicles, overhauled under the Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity (Project HOPE) initiative, were officially handed over by the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KWSPHCDA) to the State Hospital Management Board in Ilorin on Thursday.
According to a statement from Bukola Abdulganiyu, the Press Secretary of the KWSPHCDA, the project represents a collaborative triumph involving the State Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Finance, Project HOPE steering leadership, and international development partners.

*KWARA Must Never Again Record 724 Illegal Drug Premises: Kwara-HMB Call for Community Health Committee Collaboration & Partnership*

The recent discovery and closure of 724 illegal drug premises in Kwara State by inspectors of the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) from Abuja is a source of serious concern to the Kwara State Government and all stakeholders in the health sector. While the enforcement exercise is commendable, the sheer number of illegal premises uncovered is alarming and unacceptable.

The existence of 724 illegal drug outlets raises critical questions about the extent of unregulated medicine distribution within our communities. More troubling is the possibility that many residents may have unknowingly purchased medicines from unauthorized sources for years, exposing themselves to significant health risks.

Many illegal drug premises are operated by non-pharmacists and individuals who lack the necessary pharmaceutical education, training, and professional oversight required for the safe handling and dispensing of medicines. Such operators do not possess adequate knowledge of drug storage requirements, medication counseling, dosage management, adverse drug reactions, or drug interactions. The result can be treatment failure, medication errors, antimicrobial resistance, avoidable complications, and even loss of life.

The true health impact of these illegal operations may never be fully known. Countless cases of poor health outcomes, prolonged illnesses, and medication-related complications may have originated from medicines obtained through these unregulated channels without ever being traced back to their source.

The findings by the PCN inspectors from Abuja should serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders, particularly the Kwara State Pharmaceutical Inspectors Committee (PIC). This is a time for reflection, reassessment, and strategic action. The staggering figure of 724 illegal premises suggests that existing surveillance and enforcement mechanisms require strengthening.

The Kwara PIC should redirect its energy toward developing more robust and proactive strategies aimed at identifying and eliminating illegal drug outlets before they become entrenched in our communities.

*Recommendation: Leverage on Existing Community Health Committees*

• The Kwara State Pharmaceutical Inspectors Committee (PIC) should leverage the Community Health Committees established by the Kwara State Hospitals Management Board (KW-HMB) across 46 communities spread across the state.

• These committees have already demonstrated their effectiveness in supporting the monitoring and supervision of state-owned health facilities, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

• Their grassroots presence and close relationship with community members position them to serve as valuable partners in identifying and reporting illegal drug premises and unauthorized medicine vendors.

• The committees can also support public enlightenment campaigns on the dangers of patronizing illegal drug outlets and encourage residents to seek pharmaceutical services from licensed providers.

• By integrating these Community Health Committees into its surveillance and intelligence-gathering framework, the Kwara PIC can significantly expand its reach, improve community-based reporting, and strengthen efforts to reduce the prevalence of illegal drug premises across the state.

The goal must be unequivocal: when PCN inspectors from Abuja return for future enforcement exercises, they should find a significantly reduced number of illegal drug premises in Kwara State. Such an outcome would demonstrate that lessons have been learned, corrective actions have been implemented, and public health protection remains a top priority.

Protecting the public from unsafe medicines is a collective responsibility. The startling figure of 724 illegal drug premises must never become the norm in Kwara State. Instead, it should serve as a catalyst for renewed regulatory vigilance, stronger enforcement, and sustained efforts to build a safer, more accountable, and professionally regulated pharmaceutical sector for the benefit of all Kwarans.
