NEURON
A neuron ( also called neurone or nerve cell) is a cell that carris electrical impulses.
Neurons are the basic( functional and structual) unit of our nervous system.

Every neuron is made of a cell body( also called Soma or Cyton), dendrites and an Axon.
Dendrites and axons are nerve fibers.
There are about 86 billion neurons in the human brain, which comprises roughly 10 persent of all brain cells.
Human brain has roughly 16 billion neurons in the cerebral cortex.
The neurons are supported by glial cells and astrocytes.

Neurons are connected to one another and tissues.
They do not touch each other, instead they form tiny gaps called Synapses.
These gaps can be chemical synapses or electrical synapses and pass the signal from one neuron to the next.

By Cannection

There are three classes of neurons: afferent neurons, and interneurons.
1) Afferent neurons carry information from tissues and organs into the central nervous system.
2) Efferent neurons transport signals from the central nervous system to the effector cells.
3) Internervous connect neurons within the central nervous system.

By Function

1) Sensory neurons carry signals from sense organs to the spinal cord and brain.
2) Relay neurons carry messages between sensory or motor neurons system.
3) Motor neurons carry signals from CNS to muscles, motor neurons are connected to the relay neurons.
The signal passes between the neurons via synapses.
Synapses are microscopic voids between cells where chemicals are released from the axon terminal of one cell to specialized chemical receptors on the dendrite of the receiving cell.

HARMATTAN RELATED DISEASES AND HOW TO STAY HEALTHY DURING THE PERIOD.
Harmattan is a dry and dusty weather which is observed between the end of November and the middle of March. It is usually characterized by a cold, dry, dusty wind in the evenings until the early hours of the mornings. When the harmattan blows hard, the heavy amount of dust in the air can severely limit visibility and even block out the sun, during harmattan there is little amount of water in the atmosphere (low humidity) this increases the spread of infections or diseases.
The harmatan has various effects on our health and can trigger a lot of diseases. The most common health problems during this season include Common Cold, Asthma, Sickle Cell Crisis, Eye problem (appolo) and cattach, bronchitis, pnemoneu, dry Skin, Tonsillitis, Nose Bleeding, Bronchitis, Pneumonia Burns, Road Traffic Accident and many other health problems.
It is good for people to prevent themselves from those infections in the spirit of staying healthy.
If you want to stay healthy during harmattan, observe the following steps so that you can cope with the season.
Wear thick cloths to make you warm.
Drink plenty water to prevent dehydration, at least 1.5 - 2 liters it prevents cold infections.
Wash your eyes regularly to avoid red eyes and wear protective spectacles.
Cover your nose and mouth with a mask.
Exercise regularly.
Apply oily creams to keep our skin healthy.
Apply lip balms and oily cream to the soles of the feet, it will help to prevent them from cracking.
Reduce exposure to the dust.
If you are Asthmatic, reduce exposure to dirty and dusty atmosphere and always keep the inhaler handy.
Wash fruits and vegetables properly before eating.
Don’t drink soda, coke and other carbonated soft drinks, they may dehydrate your skin.
Drink hot tea, because it keeps you warm and free of flu.
Bath with warm water, in the mornings, evenings because it will keep your body warm and free from cold and other flu symptoms.
Switch off all electrical appliances after use.
Quench naked fire after use.

The responsibility of local health departments is to
protect and promote health, and prevent disease
and injury. Public health services are population
based – that is, services which are focused on
improving the health status of the population, as
opposed primary care providers who respond to
the treatment of individuals.
To accomplish this mission, public health
departments balance three core government public
health functions. These functions are essential to
the maintenance of population-based services.

Consequences for the politics of inequality in
global public health
"The ascendency of corporate capital in global
health has restricted the political terrain where
inequalities in public health can be contested.
Redistributive healthcare reform is focused on the
market while existing public health services are
increasingly overburdened. This shift reflects both
the explicit preference for the private sector
amongst the major health donors and dependence
on donor contributions for government health
expenditure in many developing countries. These
changes weaken both decommodification as a
strategy of redistribution and the collective basis of
alliance around health justice. The regulatory
powers and responsibilities of the state in public
health have been narrowed. This is partially
because of the reduction in budgets and
marginalisation of public health in government
ministries, but also because the importance of
public/private partnerships means that states now
act as facilitators rather than regulators of
corporate involvement in health. Corporate social
responsibility (CSR) initiatives can also be a way
for companies to avoid regulation by negotiating
their own norms and making compliance
voluntary."

The Best Anti-Aging Secrets
The secret of anti-ageing
There are times when we keep staring at
ourselves in mirror wondering how even a small
fine line has appeared on the skin or even a
wrinkle, there also are times when we have
wondered at the perfect complexion anyone
has along with perfectly white teeth or lustrous
hair.
Here we are to give you all the methods which
will help in retaining younger look for longer
duration in natural way without use of heavy
chemical based cosmetics, below given are the
list of products which will ensure that ageing is
slightly delayed through natural process:
Sesame oil:
Using this oil first thing in the morning to
massage entire body gives best treatment for
removal of dead skin cells which are cleaned
after going to shower. Additionally this oil also
increases blood circulation and providing
moisture to the skin by hydrating it which is
said to be the reason for glow on skin.
Fish oil:
Products which are rich in anti-inflammation
are said to be best for preventing putting on
age at faster rate, they also are said to work
wonder for better hair growth, give supple look
to the skin, improvise immunity system in body
and help in better heart health. For better
benefits to be gained from this it is sufficient to
intake 500 milligrams of this omega-3 fish oil
capsules daily in the morning and night.
Gulp down beverages:
If any of the beverages like coffee, tea or any
colored juices are consumed at slower pace for
about one hour it will add stain on teeth
instead it has to be drunk quickly which is
surely said to avoid applying coating again and
again due to longer sipping of this beverage.
Replace foundation with concealer:
Regular usage of foundation is said to settle
down into the wrinkles which increases the
focus on them instead is it sufficient to settle
down with concealer at any marks left on skin
or under eye area, this can also be followed
with smaller application of moisturizer.
Simple beauty care:
Though there are several steps which are
advised some leading and famous beauty care
companies it is suggested to go with simple
beauty routine which includes using cleanser to
clean the face and apply some moisturizer
before going to bed.
Scrub with white sugar:
First and foremost product which has to be
kept away from diet includes processed sugar
since it is said to hasten the aging process
which will bind up and later weaken collagen in
skin that will finally result in increased wrinkles
on skin also giving it a sagged look. For this to
avoid it is suggested to go with fresh
vegetables and fruits in daily diet and
additionally though sugar cannot be used for
consumption it is suggested to use it for
scrubbing due to its property of being a mild
cleanser for which white sugar can be used on
entire body to make it smooth and get ready for
makeup.
Sleep adds bounce to hair:
Though it is not really necessary if the hair is
straightened at night with flat iron and worn in
the form of loose ponytail on forehead then it is
said to add bounce to the hair as soon as it is
morning.
Take extra care of eye:
Skin surrounding eyes is much more sensitive
when compared to the skin on remaining face,
hence face creams do not work on area around
eye. Instead it is suggested to use products
that are exclusively made for this area
removing fine lines, to keep this area looking
fresh all time it is suggested to used gel rather
than any other form.
Give spa treatment to hands:
Hands are often not given the care they
actually are eligible for, often care is not given
to them but when the signs of aging are noticed
people tend to fasten the process of taking care
of them. Hence the exfoliator used on face will
also be good to use on hands or even if there is
mask on face it can also be extended on to use
in hands due to the presence of enzyme on
both hands and face.
De-stress:
Massage is said to definitely increase the
energy levels giving the feel of being young for
longer duration, if there is no sufficient time or
money for this to be done on regular basis it is
suggested to extract same type of benefits
from 20 minutes of normal physical activity and
mediation that is sure to calm down the nerves
due to deeper inhaling and exhaling.
Increase vitamin intake:
Vitamin-C is a great antioxidant that is said to
help in repairing the damage undergone by skin
additionally with SPF combined to these
properties of sunscreen will have even better
effect on skin.
Increase fruit quantity:
Malic acid present in strawberries, grapes and
apples is known to be perfect cleanser of teeth
removing all the stain hence these fresh fruits
can be taken in appropriate amounts.
Choose primer:
When there is not much time left for heavy
makeup it is enough to get primer all over face
and chest which has tiny reflective particles
that ward off light on skin lessening the
appearance of fine lines.
Choose by face:
Based on the face it is suggested to go with
that haircut that has lifting effect on the
features.
Try this hair trick:
Rather than going with styling gel for hair it is
suggested to go with conditioner or mask
which will have to be used on damp hair before
drying it up through blower. This not only has
control over the hair but also is said to provide
enough hydration for the hair giving younger
hair.
Take care of eye lashes:
If proper care is not taken of the lashes they
might turn out to be brittle and dry which will
finally fall down, in order to prevent this it is
suggested to go with application of eye cream
on the tips of eye lashes with fingers to keep
them moisturized and maintain proper health.

An Office Boy
A jobless man applied for the position of ‘office
boy’ at a very big company.
The employer interviewed him, then a test:
clean the floor.
“You are hired.” – the employer said. “Give me
your email address, and I’ll send you the
application to fill, as well as when you will
start.”
The man replied, “I don’t have a computer,
neither an email.”
“I’m sorry,” said the employer, “if you don’t
have an email that means you do not exist.
And who doesn’t exist, cannot have the job.”
The man left with no hope. He didn’t know
what to do, with only $10 USD in his pocket.
He then decided to go to the supermarket,
bought a 10kg tomato crate, then sold the
tomatoes door to door. In less than two hours,
he succeeded and doubled his capital.
He repeated the operation 3 times and returned
home with $60 USD. The man realized that he
could survive by this way, and started to go
everyday earlier, and returned late. Thus, his
money doubled or tripled everyday. Shortly
later, he bought a cart, then a truck, and then
he had his own fleet of delivery vehicles.
Five years later, the man’s company was one of
the biggest food retailers. He started to plan his
family’s future, and decided to have a life
insurance.
He called an insurance broker and chose a
protection plan. When the conversation was
concluded, the broker asked him his email. The
man replied: “I don’t have an email.”
The broker replied curiously, “You don’t have
an email, and yet have succeeded to build an
empire. Do you imagine what you could have
done if you had an email?”
The man paused for a while, and replied: “An
office boy!”

Nigeria is one step closer to achieving the goal of
eradicating polio in 2017 as it has been one year
since the last case of polio was reported in the
country.
The last case of polio in Nigeria was reported
exactly a year today, involving a 16-month-old
boy from Sumaila LGA in Kano State.
In a press statement made available to
LEADERSHIP yesterday in Abuja, the executive
director, National Primary Health Care Development
Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Ado Mohammed, said that if
all pending laboratory investigations return
negative in the next few weeks, Nigeria will
officially be taken off the list of polio-endemic
countries.
He, however, stated that Nigeria will only be
certified polio-free by WHO in 2017, provided it
maintains its zero case status, further strengthens
its surveillance system, improves routine
immunisation and maintains high quality
campaigns. Consequently, achieving one year
without polio is just one of the difficulties the
country needs to surmount before being certified
polio-free in 2017.
Ado stated, “As early as 2012, Nigeria with 122
polio virus cases, had reported the highest number
of polio cases globally and was the polio epicentre
of the world. As the immediate past minister of
state for health, Engr. Fidelis Nwankwo said, our
eyes are on the prize, but this is the most critical
time in the programme. Because the stakes are so
high, we know that the eyes of the world are on us
all to deliver and there is no room for complacency
until we achieve eradication in 2017. We are far
from there yet.”
“We are really excited by the historic progress that
has been made here in Nigeria; however, we can’t
get distracted by this progress. We are now
looking ahead to our next challenge which is to
sustain the momentum on an emergency footing
until 2017, with strong government oversight and
continued levels of funding, so that Nigeria can hit
the three-year mark with no cases, and finally
eradicate this crippling disease.”
According to the NPHCDA executive director, If this
progress is sustained with no re-infection and
surveillance remains strong, Nigeria and the rest of
Africa will achieve polio eradication by 2017.
He said, “Government and partners reiterate that
it’s going to take a lot of hard work. Polio
campaigns will need to continue and reach all
children in the country several times a year. While
there is polio anywhere in this world, every child is
at risk. Surveillance needs to become even more
sensitive so that no virus will be missed. And
routine immunisation coverage needs to improve
significantly, especially in the northern states.”
“Nigeria launched an all-out effort, with focused
attention, resources and activities on the remaining
polio strongholds of the country, particularly the
northern states. Special approaches were
developed in the security compromised areas,
including a focus on reaching the internally
displaced populations. We recognise that it will
only be through strong commitment, coordination
underpinned by accountability that Nigeria will be
able to stop transmission and sustain the gains
through to eradication in 2017.”

Environmental Health Officers (also known as Public Health Inspectors) are responsible for carrying out measures for protecting public health, including administering and enforcing legislation related to environmental health and providing support to minimize health and safety hazards. They are involved in a variety of activities, for example inspecting food facilities, investigating public health nuisances, and implementing disease control. Environmental health officers are focused on prevention, consultation, investigation, and education of the community regarding health risks and maintaining a safe environment.

EHOs bring to the position an understanding of microbiology, risk assessment, environmental science and technology, food science, as well as the skills and knowledge related to the tracking and control of communicable disease. They must also have strong investigative skills and a thorough understanding of the application of legislation related to public health and the environment. Working in partnership with Government Ministries (such as Health, Agriculture and Environment), local municipalities, businesses, community groups, other agencies and individual members of the community, the EHO plays a major role in protecting public health.

Some past/historic titles include inspector of nuisances, sanitarian, and sanitary inspector. Other titles that currently exist include environmental health specialist/practitioner/professional, public health officer, health officer, health inspector, and health official. The legal title used will depend on the definitions found in local legislation/jurisdiction.

22/06/2014

Environmental health addresses all the physical, chemical, and biological factors external to a person, and all the related factors impacting behaviours. It encompasses the assessment and control of those environmental factors that can potentially affect health. It is targeted towards preventing disease and creating health-supportive environments. This definition excludes behaviour not related to environment, as well as behaviour related to the social and cultural environment, and genetics
