DG KNSPHCMB HAILS GOVERNOR ABBA KABIR YUSUF'S THREE YEARS OF UNPRECEDENTED INVESTMENT IN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE

The Director General of the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, Professor Salisu Ahmed Ibrahim, has congratulated the Executive Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on the occasion of his third anniversary in office, describing the Governor's tenure as a period marked by strategic investments, bold reforms, and renewed commitment to strengthening Primary Health Care services across the state.

Professor Salisu stated that over the past three years, the Governor has demonstrated exceptional leadership in repositioning the health sector, particularly at the primary healthcare level, where significant interventions have been implemented to improve access, quality, and efficiency of healthcare services. He noted that under Governor Yusuf's administration, numerous Primary Health Care facilities have undergone renovation and upgrading, while critical investments have been made in medical equipment, essential drugs, healthcare workforce development, routine immunization, maternal and child health services, and community-based health programmes.

According to the DG, the administration's sustained support for Primary Health Care has enhanced service delivery and strengthened the capacity of health facilities to meet the healthcare needs of communities across the 44 Local Government Areas of the state. He further observed that the Governor's commitment to ensuring functional and accessible healthcare at the grassroots level has contributed significantly to improving health outcomes and advancing the state's healthcare agenda.

Professor Salisu also commended Governor Yusuf for his consistent support to the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board through the approval of key policies, programmes, and interventions aimed at revitalizing the primary healthcare system. He noted that the administration's people-centred approach to governance has created an enabling environment for the implementation of reforms designed to achieve universal access to quality and affordable healthcare services.

I, Professor Salisu Ahmad Professor Salisu Ahmed Ibrahim, Director General of the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, heartily felicitate with the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Murtala Sule Garo; the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf; traditional institutions, healthcare workers, development partners, and the good people of Kano State on the joyous occasion of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Eid-el-Kabir remains a significant period of sacrifice, obedience, compassion, unity, and gratitude. It is also a time for reflection and prayers for sustained peace, prosperity, and development in Kano State and the nation at large.

KSPHCMB DG CONDUCTS UNSCHEDULED FACILITY VISITS, MOVES TO STRENGTHEN 24-HOUR HEALTHCARE SERVICES IN DALA

The Director General of the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board (KSPHCMB), Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, has conducted unscheduled supervisory visits to Lawan Dambazau Primary Health Centre, Fuskar Arewa, and Dala Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Centre in Dala Local Government Area as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen quality and 24-hour healthcare service delivery across Kano State.

During the visits, the DG inspected key service delivery units including Immunization, Antenatal Care (ANC), Growth Monitoring, Outpatient Department (OPD), Labour Room and Maternity Units, where he carried out on-the-job mentoring and supervision of frontline health workers. At Lawan Dambazau PHC, Professor Salisu identified critical challenges affecting effective service delivery, including inadequate professional staff, poor sanitation, leaking roofs, inadequate lighting, lack of constant water supply and insufficient delivery equipment. He expressed concern over weak facility maintenance and directed immediate corrective actions to restore standards and improve efficiency.

As part of the interventions, the DG approved the deployment of nine professional staff, including a midwife for the labour room, and directed the organisation of capacity-building sessions for health workers on antenatal, labour and delivery services. He also tasked the Dala Primary Health Care Coordinator to ensure additional staff deployment after the Sallah celebration to support the Board’s 24-hour healthcare service initiative.

Similarly, at Dala MCH, Professor Salisu supervised activities across service units and cautioned health personnel against negligence of duty, particularly at the Growth Monitoring Unit. He further directed facility management to utilise available internally generated revenue and support funds to procure essential equipment and consumables needed to improve healthcare delivery, while commending the maternity unit for maintaining the availability of emergency drugs.

Speaking during the visit, the Representative of the District Head of Dala, Wakilin Fuskar Arewa, Alhaji Faruk Sayyadi Yola, commended the Director General for the proactive supervision and commitment towards improving healthcare services in the area, while assuring the Board of continued community support and collaboration towards achieving better health outcomes for residents.

KNSPHCMB, PATHFINDER INTERNATIONAL, IMPACT CATALYSTS CHART ROADMAP FOR STRONGER COMMUNITY HEALTHCARE AT THE END OF CARMINS CO-DESIGN WORKSHOP

The Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, in collaboration with Pathfinder International and Catalysts, has successfully concluded a 3-day CARMINS Co-Design Workshop focused on strengthening community-level healthcare delivery systems and workforce coordination across Kano State.

The workshop, held from 18th to 20th May 2026 at BON Hotel Kano, convened stakeholders from the health sector, government institutions, development partners, and community structures to co-create practical and sustainable strategies for improving primary healthcare service delivery, governance, financing, supply chain systems, workforce sustainability, and community accountability mechanisms.

Deliberations on the final day centered on implementation planning, harmonization of group work outputs, sustainability pathways for Community-Based Health Workers (CBHWs), integration of data systems, and financing models to support long-term healthcare interventions. Participants also developed key action points and next steps, including validation of workshop findings, development of an implementation roadmap, and strengthening coordination among critical community health actors in the state.

Speaking at the closing session, the Director General of the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim, described the workshop as a major step toward building a resilient and community-driven healthcare system in Kano State. He commended Pathfinder International and Impact Catalysts for their strategic collaboration and reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to implementing the resolutions and recommendations reached during the workshop to improve healthcare access and outcomes across communities.

The Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, in collaboration with Gammun Centre for Care and Development Nigeria under the Kano Hypertension Advocacy Initiative (KHAI), today organized a one-day advocacy training for Local Government Area Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Coordinators at the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), Kano. The training aimed to strengthen advocacy capacity and enhance coordinated efforts toward addressing hypertension and other non-communicable diseases across Kano State.

The workshop brought together health stakeholders, programme officers, and NCD coordinators from across the state to deepen their understanding of advocacy concepts, communication strategies, stakeholder engagement, negotiation skills, and evidence-based advocacy approaches. Participants also engaged in sessions on the burden of hypertension in Kano State, advocacy cycle processes, action plan development, and group presentations designed to promote practical learning and sustainable community engagement.

Speaking during the opening session, the Director General of KNSPHCMB, Professor Salisu Ahmad Professor Salisu Ahmed Ibrahim, described advocacy as a vital tool for strengthening public health interventions and mobilizing collective action against the growing burden of hypertension. He noted that effective advocacy and community engagement remain critical to improving prevention, early detection, treatment, and management of non-communicable diseases at the grassroots level. The DG further urged participants to apply the knowledge acquired from the training to drive impactful advocacy initiatives within their respective LGAs.

The training featured technical presentations, interactive discussions, and group exercises facilitated by officials from the State Ministry of Health, KSPHCMB, and Gammun Centre for Care and Development Nigeria, reaffirming the commitment of government and partners toward strengthening health systems and improving the response to non-communicable diseases in Kano State.

KNSPHCMB, MSF STRENGTHEN COLLABORATION ON NUTRITION AND PRIMARY HEALTHCARE SERVICES IN KANO

The Director General of the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board, Professor Salisu Ahmad Professor Salisu Ahmed Ibrahim, alongside the KNSPHCMB Nutrition Team, paid a supervisory visit to the Unguwa Uku Primary Health Centre to assess ongoing interventions being implemented by Médecins Sans Frontières to support the State in fighting the Malnutrition Crisis.

The Director General was accompanied by the Head of Mission of Médecins Sans Frontières / MSF, Mohamed Dalal, and the MSF WACA Kano State Project Coordinator, Meria Nadje. During the visit, the team toured various departments of the facility where MSF-supported healthcare and nutrition activities were showcased, including Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP) services and staff capacity-building initiatives ongoing in the facility.

Speaking during the engagement, Professor Salisu Ahmad Ibrahim commended MSF for its impactful contributions towards improving child health, especially and nutrition outcomes in Kano State. The Head of Mission sort the DGs support on the need for stronger multisectoral collaboration involving religious leaders, the Ministry of Agriculture and other critical stakeholders to tackle malnutrition comprehensively. He also stressed the importance of strengthening human resources for health, improving number of HCWs and their capacity in tacking Malnutrition across the 44 LGAs, especially across the 96 OTPs

In his remarks, the DG Prof. Salisu highlighted the importance of sustained partnership and coordinated action among development partners to ensure long-term sustainability of nutrition interventions in the state. Discussions during the visit also focused on developing a harmonized roadmap among nutrition partners including MSF, UNICEF, Nutrition International and other stakeholders, while advocating for continuous training and support for healthcare workers managing OTP services across the state.

The visit forms part of KNSPHCMB’s ongoing commitment to supportive supervision, quality improvement and strengthening partnerships aimed at expanding access to effective and sustainable primary healthcare and nutrition services for communities across Kano State.
