Fatty liver disease and other metabolic conditions

Causative Agents
The main viruses that cause viral hepatitis are:
Hepatitis A virus (HAV)
Hepatitis B virus (HBV)
Hepatitis C virus (HCV)
Hepatitis D virus (HDV)

Prevention Strategies

3. Use safe injection practices and sterile medical equipment.
4. Screen donated blood before transfusion.
5. Practice safe s*x by using condoms.
6. Avoid sharing needles, razors, toothbrushes, or other personal items that may be contaminated with blood.

International Self-Care Day 2026
Theme: Self-Care Puts Your Health in Your Hands: Test. Track. Thrive.
International Self-Care Day, observed annually on 24 July, is a global call to empower individuals and communities to take an active role in maintaining their health and well-being. The 2026 theme, "Self-Care Puts Your Health in Your Hands: Test. Track. Thrive.", highlights the importance of making informed health decisions through regular health checks, monitoring personal health, and adopting healthy lifestyle practices.
Self-care is more than treating illness—it is about preventing disease, promoting healthy living, and taking responsibility for one's physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Through self-care, people can access reliable health information, practice healthy behaviors, use self-care interventions where appropriate, and seek professional
As demonstrated in these awareness activities, messages such as "Healthy You, Healthy Community," "Family Planning is Self-Care," "My Body, My Health," "Invest in Yourself Through Self-Care," and "Healthy Youth, Healthy Nation" reinforce the importance of personal responsibility in achieving healthier families and stronger communities.
Family planning is a key component of self-care. It enables individuals and couples to make informed reproductive health choices, space pregnancies safely, and improve maternal and child health outcomes.

The event was held in Nasarawa eggon LGA, Nasarawa State and featured range of integrated health services, including Family Planning (FP) counseling and services, HIV counseling and testing, HIV self-testing, and DMPA-SC self-injection education and demonstration.
Participants received comprehensive information on available family planning methods, enabling them to make informed reproductive health choices. HIV counseling and testing services were provided to encourage individuals to know their HIV status, while HIV self-testing kits were introduced as a confidential and convenient option that supports early diagnosis and linkage to care.
A major highlight of the event was the demonstration of DMPA-SC self-injection, where eligible women were trained on the safe and correct administration of the injectable contraceptive. This self-care intervention empowers women with greater autonomy, improves contraceptive continuation, and increases access to family planning, particularly for those who may face barriers to visiting health facilities regularly.
The event reaffirmed the importance of self-care in strengthening health systems and improving individual well-being. By promoting self-managed health interventions, International Self-Care Day continues to encourage people to take an active role in maintaining their health while ensuring they have access to accurate information, quality services, and supportive healthcare providers.

World Population Day 2026
Theme: "Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people – today and for the future."
Introduction
Every year on 11 July, the global community commemorates World Population Day to raise awareness of population-related issues and promote actions that improve the quality of life for all people. The observance serves as a reminder that population is about people—their rights, opportunities, wellbeing, and ability to contribute meaningfully to society.
The 2026 theme, "Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people – today and for the future," places young people at the heart of sustainable development. It recognizes that the dreams of today's youth will shape the future of families, communities, nations, and the world. Investing in young people today means creating a healthier, more prosperous, and more equitable tomorrow.
Understanding the Theme
Young people possess enormous energy, creativity, and innovation. However, many continue to face barriers such as poverty, unemployment, inadequate education, limited access to healthcare, gender inequality, insecurity, and lack of opportunities. These challenges often prevent them from achieving their full potential.
The 2026 World Population Day theme calls on governments, development partners, civil society organizations, parents, and communities to remove these barriers by creating environments where young people can thrive, make informed decisions, and pursue their aspirations with confidence.
Why Young People Matter
Young people represent one of the greatest assets of every nation. When they are healthy, educated, skilled, and empowered, they become drivers of economic growth, social progress, innovation, and peace.
Supporting young people means:
Providing quality education.
Creating employment opportunities.
Promoting entrepreneurship and innovation.
Ensuring access to healthcare.
Protecting their rights.
Encouraging civic participation and leadership.
When these investments are made, countries benefit from a productive workforce and stronger communities.
Sexual and Reproductive Health: A Key Investment
An important aspect of empowering young people is ensuring access to s*xual and reproductive health information and services. Adolescents and young adults need accurate information that enables them to make informed choices about their health and future.
This includes:
Youth-friendly family planning services.
Comprehensive s*xuality education.
Prevention of s*xually transmitted infections.
Maternal health services for young mothers.
Counselling and psychosocial support.
Prevention of child marriage and gender-based violence.
Access to these services helps reduce unintended pregnancies, improves maternal health, keeps girls in school, and enables young people to pursue their goals.
The Role of Families and Communities
Parents, guardians, teachers, religious leaders, and traditional institutions all have a vital role in shaping the future of young people. By encouraging open communication, supporting education, promoting positive values, and providing guidance, communities can help young people make responsible life decisions.
Communities should also work to eliminate stigma surrounding reproductive health discussions and promote equal opportunities for both girls and boys.
The Role of Government and Partners
Governments and development organizations should strengthen policies and programmes that:
Improve access to quality education.
Expand youth employment initiatives.
Strengthen healthcare systems.
Increase access to family planning services.
Promote gender equality.
Support youth participation in governance.
Invest in digital and vocational skills.
Protect vulnerable young people from violence and exploitation.
These actions ensure that no young person is left behind.
Community Activities for World Population Day
World Population Day provides an opportunity to educate and mobilize communities through activities such as:
Road walks and awareness campaigns.
Community dialogues.
Radio and television discussions.
School and youth outreach programmes.
Free medical and family planning services.
Distribution of educational materials.
Social media advocacy.
Youth debates and competitions.
Stakeholder engagement meetings.
Cultural performances promoting healthy living.
These activities help spread awareness while encouraging individuals to take positive action.
Key Messages
Every young person deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Education, health, and empowerment are essential investments.
Family planning supports healthier families and stronger communities.
Gender equality enables both girls and boys to succeed.
Young people should actively participate in decisions affecting their future.
Investing in youth today creates sustainable development tomorrow.
Conclusion
World Population Day 2026 is a call to action for everyone—governments, communities, parents, development partners, and young people themselves—to work together in creating a future where every young person can realize their hopes and aspirations.
By investing in education, healthcare, employment, gender equality, and s*xual and reproductive health, we empower young people to become confident leaders, responsible citizens, and agents of positive change. When young people are given the opportunity to thrive today, they build stronger families, healthier communities, and more prosperous nations for generations to come.
Closing Statement:
"The future of every nation depends on the opportunities we create for young people today. By investing in their hopes, aspirations, health, and education, we are investing in a future of resilience, prosperity, and sustainable development
