Hantavirus
β Hantavirus is a rare but serious viral infection mainly spread through infected rodents like rats and mice.
β The virus can be present in rodent urine, droppings, saliva, or contaminated dust.
β People usually get infected when they clean or stay in places where infected rodents have been present, especially closed or poorly ventilated areas.
π£ How does it spread?
β Breathing in dust contaminated with rodent urine or droppings
β Touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes
β Rodent bites, though this is less common
β Human-to-human spread is very rare and mainly reported with Andes virus in South America among close contacts.
π£ Early symptoms
β Fever
β Headache
β Muscle pain
β Tiredness
β Nausea or vomiting
β Abdominal pain
π£ Warning signs
β Cough
β Shortness of breath
β Chest tightness
β Low blood pressure
β Severe weakness
β Signs of kidney problems in some cases
π£ Why is it dangerous?
β In some people, hantavirus can quickly affect the lungs and heart, causing a serious condition called hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome.
β In some regions, it can also affect the kidneys and blood vessels, causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.
π£ Treatment
β There is no specific cure for hantavirus infection.
β Treatment is mainly supportive care in the hospital.
β Early medical care, oxygen support, ICU monitoring, and management of lung, heart, or kidney complications can improve survival.
π£ Prevention
β Keep homes and workplaces clean
β Seal holes where rodents can enter
β Store food properly
β Avoid dry sweeping rodent droppings
β Wet contaminated areas before cleaning
β Wear protection while cleaning rodent-infested spaces
β Wash hands properly after cleaning
π£ When to seek urgent medical help?
β If fever, body pain, vomiting, or weakness happens after possible rodent exposure
β If symptoms are followed by cough, breathlessness, dizziness, or severe weakness
β Breathing difficulty after rodent exposure should be treated as an emergency
