*What You Need to Know About Hantavirus*

*Hantavirus* was first discovered in 1978. It’s a rare but serious illness spread mainly through contact with infected rodents, their urine, droppings, and saliva. It is not spread from person to person.

*How it spreads*
You can get infected by breathing in dust contaminated with rodent droppings or urine, often when cleaning sheds, barns, or stored spaces. Direct contact with infected rodents or nesting materials is also a risk.

*Key symptoms*
Signs appear 1-8 weeks after exposure and may feel like the flu: high fever, chills, severe muscle aches, fatigue, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain. Severe cases can progress to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), causing life-threatening breathing difficulty.

*Prevention tips*
1. Seal holes and gaps to keep rodents out
2. Store food in airtight containers and dispose of waste properly
3. Wet droppings with disinfectant before cleaning—don’t sweep dry
4. Wear gloves and a mask when cleaning areas with signs of rodents

*When to seek care*
If you develop flu-like symptoms after possible rodent exposure, visit a healthcare facility immediately. Early medical attention improves outcomes.

*WIW 2026: Vaccines Have Saved Over 150 Million Lives Globally – WHO*

The last week of April every year is World Immunization Week. It’s a time set aside to highlight the collective action needed to promote vaccines and protect people of all ages from disease.

According to the World Health Organization, vaccines have saved more than 150 million lives over the past 50 years because ordinary people chose to protect themselves from diseases like measles, diphtheria, pertussis, polio, and rotavirus.

Today, newer vaccines against malaria, HPV, cholera, meningitis, RSV, Ebola, and mpox are saving even more lives and helping people live longer and healthier due to scientific advancements, it said.
