We still have more work to do, but every step towards greater understanding brings us closer to acceptance and inclusion.

What does it mean when we say something is genetic?

Genetics is the branch of biology that studies genes, heredity, and how traits are passed from parents to their children.

Our bodies contain DNA, which carries biological information. Within our DNA are genes—units of information that help guide how our bodies develop and function.

Genes can influence many characteristics, such as skin pigmentation, eye colour, hair characteristics, and other biological traits.

WHAT IS A GENETIC CONDITION?

A genetic condition is a condition that results from a change or variation in one or more genes. These changes can affect how certain parts of the body develop or function.

Some genetic conditions can be inherited from parents, while others can result from genetic changes that occur for the first time in an individual.

WHAT DOES “HEREDITARY” MEAN?

Hereditary means that a genetic trait or condition can be passed from biological parents to their children through genes.

So, while the terms genetic and hereditary are related, they do not always mean exactly the same thing.

📌 Hereditary = capable of being passed from parents to children.

Understanding these basic concepts helps us have more accurate conversations about health, genetics, and inherited conditions.

• Sunscreen has NOT been shown to cause cancer in humans in any peer-reviewed scientific study.

• What is proven to cause skin cancer? Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and tanning beds.

Don’t believe everything you see online. Make sure the information you trust is factual, evidence-based, and backed by science.

Expose the truth, not your skin.

Today is International Albinism Awareness Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the dignity, rights, achievements, and humanity of persons with albinism.

Theme: Proudly in My Skin: Celebrating All Skin Tones

This theme reminds us that every skin tone is beautiful, every person deserves respect, and diversity should be celebrated rather than feared. People with albinism are not defined by myths, misconceptions, or stereotypes. They are students, professionals, parents, leaders, entrepreneurs, advocates, and valuable members of society.

While we celebrate today, we also acknowledge the challenges many people with albinism continue to face, including discrimination, social exclusion, barriers to education, limited access to healthcare, and the growing threat of skin cancer caused by prolonged exposure to harmful UV rays.

To every individual with albinism around the world: be proud of who you are. Your skin is beautiful. Your life matters. Your dreams are valid, and your voice deserves to be heard.

As we mark International Albinism Awareness Day, we humbly appeal to individuals, organizations, and well-meaning supporters to help protect people with albinism from the harmful effects of the sun.

Skin cancer cases among people with albinism are increasing at an alarming rate, and many cannot afford the essential protective items needed to stay safe.

We are seeking donations of:
☀️ Sunscreen (SPF 50+)
👒 Wide-brim hats
🕶️ UV-protective sunglasses
👕 Long-sleeved clothing
☂️ Umbrellas
🧴 Lip balm with SPF
