Happy 91st birthday, Professor Graeme Clark, inventor of the multi-channel cochlear implant. 🎉🎊

You never know where inspiration will come from. Professor Clark was walking on the beach when a seashell and a blade of grass offered the inspiration needed to navigate the cochlea with the first multi-channel cochlear implant. 🐚
That was 49 years ago. Since then, his discovery has helped hundreds of thousands of people to hear. 💛

We’re proud to celebrate an extraordinary milestone in engineering and hearing health.

Professor Graeme Clark AC – the pioneering Australian surgeon‑scientist behind the multichannel cochlear implant – has been awarded the 2026 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.

His vision has helped transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Today, more than 750,000 people in over 180 countries hear with one – or two – of Cochlear’s implantable hearing solutions.

We congratulate Professor Clark and the nine QEPrize laureates whose innovation continues to push the boundaries of neural engineering.
