But in reality, labour usually begins much more gradually and calmly, and knowing when to head to the hospital can feel surprisingly unclear.

Pregnancy comes with a lot of questions.

Sometimes you may wonder, “Is this normal?” or “Should I say something?”

Here’s your reminder: you don’t have to figure everything out alone. 🌿

Here are 5 times you should reach out to your midwife during pregnancy:

1️⃣ When you notice changes that feel unusual for you.
You know your body best.
If something feels different or concerning, it’s always okay to check in and ask questions.

2️⃣ When you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or unsure.
Your emotional wellbeing is part of your pregnancy care too.
Your midwife is there to support the person carrying the baby, not just monitor the pregnancy.

3️⃣ When you have questions about your birth options.
Pain relief, birth preferences, labor choices, feeding plans, ask before the moment arrives.
Feeling informed helps you feel more confident.

4️⃣ When you’re struggling with symptoms.
You don’t have to silently push through discomfort.
Your midwife can help you understand what’s expected and what may need attention.

5️⃣ When you need reassurance.
Sometimes you just need someone to explain, listen, and remind you that you’re supported.
That’s part of care too.

You are never “bothering” your midwife by asking for support.

Some days feel heavier than others.
Too many thoughts, too many tasks, too little energy.
On those days, you don’t need to do more. You need support in simpler ways. 🌿

Here are 5 things that can help on the days you feel overwhelmed:

1️⃣ Slow everything down.
You don’t have to move at your usual pace.
Do fewer things, more gently. Let the day feel lighter where you can.

2️⃣ Focus on just one thing at a time.
Overwhelm often comes from trying to hold everything at once.
Choose one small task and give it your full attention.

3️⃣ Take a few steady breaths.
Even a minute of slow breathing can help your body settle.
It brings you back to the present moment.

But in many cases, there are underlying factors that influence how labor progresses. 🌿

Here are 5 things that can slow down labor that are often not talked about:

1️⃣ Feeling tense or afraid.
When the body is stressed, it can shift into a protective state.
Relaxation helps the body work more efficiently during labor.

2️⃣ Lack of privacy or feeling watched.
Labor often flows better in environments where you feel safe and undisturbed.
Too many interruptions or a lack of comfort can affect progress.

3️⃣ Limited movement.
Staying in one position for too long can make it harder for your baby to move down.
Gentle movement and position changes can support progress.

4️⃣ Exhaustion.

Here are 5 truths about pain in labor that might shift your mindset:

1️⃣ It has a purpose.
Each contraction is doing something specific.
It’s helping your cervix open and your baby move down.
This isn’t random pain, it’s purposeful work.

2️⃣ It comes in waves.
Unlike constant pain, contractions rise, peak, and then ease.
Those breaks in between matter. They give your body and mind time to reset.

3️⃣ Your body responds to how you hold tension.
Fear and tightness can increase discomfort.
Breathing, movement, and relaxation can help your body work more efficiently.

4️⃣ You don’t have to handle it in one way.
There are many ways to cope with labor.
Movement, support, water, breathing, or medical pain relief are all valid options.

5️⃣ It does not last forever.
