A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN
Pharmacy technicians can work in hospitals, clinics, community practice, rehabilitation and long-term care facilities, but according to the National Health Law, they are most frequently supervised by a licensed pharmacists. If you are interested in getting your pharmacy technician certification, you might be curious about what to expect day to day as a pharmacy technician.
In an interviewed granted to me by Linx communication tagged "A day in the life of a Pharmacy Technician" due to my past experience as a Retail Pharmacy Technician, I was able to provide some great insight into what a day in the life is like for a retail pharmacy technician.
Most retail pharmacies will open in the morning between 8am and yet to closed 9pm. Since the pharmacy is part of a larger front store, Pharmacy Technician to the pharmacy Store play a major role by contributing more than 70% of the daily job task by acting as a Pharmacist and at a same as the cashier and Store Assistant. In this, pharmacy technician also function as the cashier for prescriptions and purchases from the retail store also receiving phone calls.
There are four possible roles the pharmacy technician will need to fulfill in his/her daily required activities:
Selling prescriptions: In this role, the pharmacy technician will cost the prescriptions to patients at the counter and also act as cashier received payment and issuing of receipt.
In this aspect, a Pharmacy Technician needs to fully wised and clinical oriented for fax medications and understands all possible side effects and interactions that the patient would likely to experience while on the medication and also tracked possible error that may incurred from the prescription as a Pharmacy is a last side of medicine and clinical practice.
Filling the medication orders: This usually involves using a computerized queue which will fax to generates scripts of medications.
The pharmacy technician will gather the necessary prescriptions and count out the required amount of medication in a required containers, label them, and give them to the pharmacist to verify if required mostly poisonous drugs.
The pharmacy technician will be responsible for handling the influx queue. This requires him or her to verify the prescriptions that are sent from doctors and must be adjudicated through the patient’s insurance. Their primary responsibility is to ensure they receive a paid claim and then send the scripts to the other technicians queue to fill. This services includes counselling the patient by incurring advice on the usage of their prescribed medication and being a career-oriented.
Inventory & Requisition: This position is sometimes a part-time one. The technician keeps counts on all of the products within the pharmacy and orders supplies and medications that are running low; expire date checking, entry of invoices, documentation, inventory updating & balancing, temperature monitoring, stock taken, pricing control, computing data's, much often modulation of Micro pharmaceutical preparation and other logistics services and adventures.
Oftentimes, this role is granted to a senior technician who is familiar with the needs of the specific patient needs for whom they serve.
As you might expect, the pharmacy technicians function as a team and must be willing to work together and swap roles as necessary throughout the day in duel cooperation.
At the end of the day, the pharmacy is closed and the cash drawer is then counted, as well as any necessary end-of-day cleanup and preparation for the following day. This would include wiping down counters, taking out the trash, and other neccesity.
There is very little downtime in the retail pharmacy environment. Lunches are a requirement of most employers but you may find yourself taking a short break instead due to being short-staffed or extremely busy.
While retail pharmacy work can be a challenge, there are many rewards which include a fast-paced learning environment, additional training, and interaction with patients. If you’re up to the job, consider attending a pharmacy technician training program and earning your CPhT certification so you too can become one and motivates on your profession of services.
And quality education and service in Pharmaceutical practices shouldn't be excluded to promotes services adequately.
