🌿 LIFE OF AN URBAN BOTANIST

I spotted this at my florist's stand. He called it "Mother of 1000 Children." 😂🌱

Look closely. Tiny new plantlets are forming all along the leaf margins. Adventitious reproduction, right there in plain sight.

My first thought? This isn't Bryophyllum pinnatum. The leaf was wrong — pale, almost dewy, nothing like the deep green I know.

Turns out I'd just never met her cousin.

Ordinary plants teaching extraordinary lessons. 🌿

🌿 HERITAGE & WISDOM

ONE BUNCH. A LESSON IN WAITING.

This bunch holds two stages at once: green, still waiting, and yellow, ready to enjoy. The third stage comes later, in its own time — when the peel begins to freckle, a sign the starches are turning to sugar underneath.

My grandmother never owned a ripening chart. She owned wisdom.

She could look at a bunch of bananas and tell you its story: when it was harvested, when it would sweeten, and who in the house would finish it first. 😂

We are slowly losing this art. We check labels instead of looking. We check dates instead of observing. Sometimes, we forget to read nature.

This bunch reminded me: not every green banana is ready to eat, and ripening isn't rushed — it arrives in stages, each one earning its place.

Heritage is not just what we inherit. It is what we remember to read.

🌿 RESILIENCE IN THE CRACKS

I found her growing out of a crack near my location.
No one planted her. No one waters her.

Yet she is flourishing.

She did not wait for perfect conditions. She made the crack her home.

🌿 PLANT OF THE WEEK

She stings — and she means it.

This is Laportea aestuans (L.) Chew, formerly known as Fleurya aestuans, family Urticaceae — a stinging nettle of tropical Africa.

Look closely at the stems, petioles and leaf surfaces and you'll find fine stinging hairs. Touch them, and she lets you know. 👀

But there's more to this plant than its sting.

Flavonoids, phenolic compounds and tannins are among the secondary plant compounds reported from this species.

And traditionally, the young leaves have been cooked and eaten, with heat used to neutralise the sting.

Found growing wild against a wall.

Ordinary plant. Serious chemistry. 🌿

🌿 HAPPY NEW MONTH 🌸

She opens fresh. Every single day.

This is morning glory (Ipomoea species) — and true to her name:

No bloom carries over.
No flower coasts on yesterday’s opening.
Tomorrow, she doesn’t reach for the one that’s gone.
She opens a new one.

New month. New bloom. Same brave roots. 🌸

Be the plant. 🌿💃🏽
Until the next bloom.

PLANT OF THE WEEK 🌿
Fruit on the trunk? Yes.

This is cacao — Theobroma cacao — and those pods aren't growing from the tips of branches.

They're growing directly from the trunk and older woody branches.

It's called cauliflory: cacao produces its tiny flowers on specialised cushions along the woody trunk, and when those flowers are pollinated, they swell into the pods you see here.

Crack one open and you'd find cacao seeds nestled in sweet white pulp — the raw beginning of chocolate, still a long way from your bar. 🌿

First time I've seen this up close.
Turns out an ordinary backyard tree had something extraordinary going on.

Life of an Urban Botanist – Episode: The Wild Corner 🌿

I went to check my aloe and found a whole community!
My Aloe vera is twisting, curling, doing yoga just to get sun, and underneath Kalanchoe is chilling like a visitor enjoying my green — growing right outside its own pot.

No perfect rows here, just Lagos sun, rain, and plants doing what plants do.

🌿 TREE HEALS IN HEART SHAPES?

See these scars on this trunk? 👀

In the city, some trees carry marks from human interaction — including places where sections of bark may have been removed for traditional plant use.

Look closely.

The tree hasn't simply been marked. Around those wounds, new tissue is forming as the tree responds to the damage.

Still standing.
Still growing.
Still giving shade. 🌿

Urban trees carry so many stories in their bark.

🌿 PLANT OF THE WEEK: NEVER DIE

If you look closely at this plant by the wall...

Scalloped edges. Thick green leaves. Purple stems.
It holds water inside like a secret.

This is Bryophyllum pinnatum — now accepted as Kalanchoe pinnata.

Some call it Life Plant. Some call it Miracle Leaf.

Yoruba: Ewé Abamoda | Igbo: Odaa Opue

One thing makes it unforgettable: its leaves can produce tiny plantlets along their edges. A fallen leaf can become the beginning of another plant. 🌱

It was one of the plants kept around many compounds. It asks for little and still thrives, even in a wall crack.
