FTH Lokoja and PAAU begin talks to strengthen medical training in Kogi State

The Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja and Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba have commenced talks to strengthen collaboration in medical training research and development. The discussions were initiated during a courtesy visit by the Chief Medical Director, Assoc. Prof. Abdulrahman Shehu with his Management team to the University on 29th July 2026. The delegation was received by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Salisu Ogbo Usman, alongside the principal officers of the College of Health Sciences.

Prof. Usman described the engagement as strategic and timely, stressing that partnership with the FTHL is critical to addressing the challenges facing PAAU’s College of Medicine. He expressed appreciation to the CMD for the support, noting that such collaboration will be instrumental to the growth and sustainability of medical training at the University.

Assoc. Prof. Shehu commended the VC for his sustained commitment to producing the University’s pioneer medical graduates. He reaffirmed FTHL’s readiness to support PAAU with clinical personnel, facilities and other areas of clinical training. The CMD stated: “This partnership aligns with our mandate to produce homegrown medical professionals in Kogi State hence, with collaboration, the challenges before us are surmountable”. He added that taking the first step toward graduating the pioneer set is the most challenging, but once achieved, continuity will be easier as template would have already been put in place.

To formalize the partnership, both Chief Executives agreed to constitute a joint Committee to draft a Memorandum of Understanding. The proposed MoU is expected to provide the framework for a formal agreement and support the clinical training requirements for PAAU’s pioneer medical students. As a symbol of goodwill, both Institutions also exchanged award plaques during the visit.

FTH LOKOJA COMMENCES PHYSICAL VERIFICATION EXERCISE FOR STAFF

The Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja, has commenced a comprehensive physical verification exercise for all members of staff. The exercise began on Tuesday, 28th July 2026, and will run through Friday, 14th August 2026, at the Pharmacy Conference Room.
The Chief Medical Director, Assoc. Prof. Abdulrahman Shehu, led members of Top Management to the venue to formally flag-off the programme. In his address, the CMD described the verification as a critical administrative process aimed at updating the hospital’s personnel records, validating staff credentials and strengthening workforce planning. He noted that having accurate and up-to-date data will enhance staff deployment, training, promotion and ultimately improve service delivery to patients.
The exercise is being coordinated by Mr. Idris Salihu, Head of Unit, Planning, Research and Statistics along his team members. The process involves staff registration, issuance of verification Forms and review of relevant credentials. Management has put measures in place to ensure the process is orderly, transparent and does not disrupt clinical and administrative services.
Speaking after the flag-off, the CMD commended the verification team for a smooth commencement and urged all staff to cooperate fully. He stressed that staff must attend within the stipulated period with all required documents. Management reaffirmed its commitment to staff welfare and assured that the outcome of the exercise will be used to improve human resource management and enhance efficiency across all Departments of the hospital.

CEmONC Initiative Restoring Hope for Mothers and Newborns in Kogi State
Hope is being restored for mothers and newborns through a Comprehensive Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care initiative in FTHL. On Monday, July 20th, a presidential delegation visited the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja to evaluate the programme' impact. The team toured critical care units and met with Dr. Adefumilola Onifade, the CEmONC Focal Person at FTHL.

The CEmONC initiative represents the Federal Government’s commitment to healthcare for the most vulnerable. The programme provides free, comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care during pregnancy, delivery, and the postnatal period, removing the financial burden that once delayed or denied treatment. Dr. Onifade said. “before now, many women have lost their lives due complications but today, because of CEmONC, both mothers and babies are being saved.”

The impact at FTHL is already visible. Since the full commencement of the programme, several indigent women have been enrolled and treated at no cost. The hospital has successfully managed emergency cases of uterine rupture and postpartum hemorrhage.

Dr. Onifade expressed gratitude to the President and the Honorable Minister of Health for prioritizing women’s and children’s health. She noted that before CEmONC, many families could not afford emergency care and outcomes were often devastating. The initiative is now bridging that gap and restoring hope to communities across the state.

With sustained support, FTHL is positioned to lead efforts to reduce maternal and newborn deaths in Kogi State. Hospital management reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the program and ensuring that no woman is denied life-saving care because of cost.

High Profile Delegates visit the FTHL facility in Koton-Karfe, Kogi State

The Ohimege Igu of Koton-Karfe, HRH Dr. Saidu Akawu Salihu, received delegations from FTHL at his palace in Koton-Karfe. The delegation was led by the Deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (Clinical), Dr. Musa Abdulkarim, alongside the Ag. Director of Administration, Alhaji Abdullai Abdulrahman; Head of Works and Services, Engr (Mrs) C.O Omatola, Head of Public Relations, Mr. Lanre Olubowale and Head of Procurement, Mr. Usman Egah. The purpose of the visit was to assess the hospital's facility to consider ways of ensuring full operations and comprehensive clinical activities for the people of the area.
Speaking with the delegates from FTHL, HRH Dr. Saudi appreciated the Management and pledged to provide any support required to ensure the full operations.
