FTH LOKOJA SCBU CELEBRATES BABY YASMINE HARUNA’S REMARKABLE RECOVERY

The Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Fthl Lokoja has another graduation to celebrate—and this one is nothing short of a miracle.

Baby Yasmine Haruna was born at 26 weeks and weighed just 0.9kg. Her weight later dropped to 0.7kg. She developed necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a serious intestinal condition, and underwent an exploratory laparotomy. She pulled through.

Her treatment included oxygen, intravenous fluids and expressed breast milk. In time, she came off oxygen entirely. Consulting Physician, Dr Tonye Ibrahim confirmed that Baby Yasmine was ready to go home. Her discharge was made possible in large part by her mother’s active and unwavering involvement in her care throughout her stay in the SCBU. At graduation, Baby Yasmine weighed 1.1kg—a hard-won milestone.

In a moving gesture, the family expressed its gratitude by making a gift to the SCBU, acknowledging the care and commitment the team poured into their daughter’s survival.

To the SCBU team at Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja: you did it again. It is further evidence that, under the current hospital management led by Associate Professor Abdulrahman Shehu, FTH Lokoja is quietly breaking new ground in pediatric medicine and maternal health.

FTH LOKOJA ANAESTHESIA DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES WORLD ANAESTHESIA DAY 2026

The Department of Anaesthesia at FTH Lokoja joined the global community to celebrate World Anaesthesia Day (WAD) 2026, in partnership with the Nigeria Society of Anaesthetists and the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists. The theme was “Before, During and Beyond Surgery.”

The celebration began with a rally through the hospital, taking the message of anaesthesia awareness directly to staff, patients and the wider hospital community.

Speaking at the rally, Head of Department Dr. Raphael Osele said anaesthesia extends far beyond the operating room. It runs through the entire patient pathway, from pre-operative preparation to post-operative recovery. He traced the specialty’s history to 180 years ago, when William Thomas Green Morton first demonstrated the use of anaesthesia, a milestone that transformed medicine and opened limitless possibilities for surgery. Dr. Osele thanked hospital management for its continued support.

The Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC) Clinical, Dr. Abdulkarim Musa commended the department for the initiative. He reiterated that in anaesthesia, oxygen is life, and affirmed management’s willingness to provide the support needed for the specialty to thrive.

Representing the CMD, the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Odekunle Raphael, said the relief anaesthesia brings extends well beyond the theatre. He praised the team spirit of the Anaesthesia Department.

A formal programme followed the rally, attended by the CMD, Assoc. Prof. Abdulrahman Shehu, and his top management team.

A highlight was the commissioning of newly donated equipment for the Anaesthesia Department. The CMD acknowledged the donation by Dr. Pamela Kaushal of the Vidya Jyoti Foundation and her mother, made in celebration of her mother’s 80th birthday, calling it a thoughtful and impactful gift to the hospital. He also recognised Dr. Taiwo Jones for facilitating the donation and formally commissioned the equipment. A letter of appreciation was presented to Dr. Taiwo Jones on behalf of Dr. Pamela and the Vidya Jyoti Foundation.

2026 UN INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE: FTHL CMD BAGS MOPEGON LIFETIME HUMANITARIAN AWARD

The Movement for Peaceful and Equitable Governance in Nigeria (MOPEGON) has conferred its Lifetime Humanitarian Service Award on Associate Professor Abdulrahman Shehu, Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja (FTHL). The presentation, which formed part of the 2026 United Nations International Day of Peace edition, took place today at the CMD’s office in Lokoja.

Presenting the award, MOPEGON Director-General Comrade Counsel Bello-Omeiza stated that the recognition was not for Associate Professor Shehu's short tenure at FTHL, but a cumulative acknowledgment of a lifetime dedicated to service.

"The UN established September 21st to globally reflect on the importance of peace, reminding us that peace is not merely the absence of war, but the presence of Justice, Security, Dialogue, and Human Dignity," Bello-Omeiza said, referencing the 2026 theme: “Invest in Peace, for Everyone, Everywhere, Everyday Peace.”

MOPEGON highlighted the CMD’s extensive track record before assuming office at FTHL on March 30, 2026. As a distinguished Chemical Pathologist, Ozovehe previously served as President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) at ABU Teaching Hospital, Zaria, and as Secretary and Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kaduna State. He was also Chairman of the NMA Committee on Remuneration and Welfare, building a reputation as a relentless advocate for colleagues' welfare and institutional integrity.

His tenure at FTHL has been marked by rapid, tangible transformation. In less than six months, he completed and commissioned a new theatre suite that had been abandoned for 13 years, effectively doubling the hospital's surgical capacity. He also conducted the earliest promotion exercise in the hospital's history, clearing staff promotions by the end of June and placing workers on new salary scales—making promotion a first-quarter ritual at FTHL.

Comrade Bello-Omeiza noted that the award celebrates a leader who "did not come to occupy a seat, but to raise a standard."
“Your past prepared you. Your present is proving you. Your future will inspire us,” the DG added, urging the CMD to remain resolute in his commitment to transforming the only Federal Tertiary Health Institution in Kogi State into a world-class centre of excellence.

Receiving the award, the CMD expressed gratitude to MOPEGON for recognizing the strides being made within the hospital.

“I understand the value of the organization’s undertaking, and we have become partners,” the CMD said. “I take this award to heart. I believe very much in peace and unity, and I have brought it to bear in every aspect I find myself. This is the second award I’m getting in peace.”
