BEMSA-NATIONAL JOINS STAKEHOLDERS TO COMMEMORATE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY, WELCOMES BENUE YOUTH POLICY 2025–2030

The Benue Medical and Dental Students Association (BEMSA-National) joined other stakeholders and youth-focused organizations at a stakeholders' summit held in commemoration of International Youth Day, following an invitation extended to the Association by the Central Planning Committee of the event.

The summit brought together key stakeholders, the Benue State Government, local and international partners in youth development in Benue State and provided an important platform for dialogue, policy engagement and the advancement of initiatives aimed at harnessing the potential of young people across the State.

The Executive Governor of Benue State (Chief Host), His Excellency, Gov. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, was ably represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barr. Mrs. SerumumDeborahAber, while the *Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Youth, Sport and Creativity, serving as host, was also in attendance alongside other government officials, stakeholders and young people.

A major highlight of the summit was the presentation of the draft Benue State Youth Policy 2025–2030, a landmark document designed to provide a structured framework for youth development and empowerment in the State. The 14th BEMSA-National President, Comr Sough Solomon Aondowase was privileged to give insight on medicine & sports, helping to bring the draft into light. The document was described at the summit as positioning Benue State as the first sub-national entity in Sub-Saharan Africa to develop such a comprehensive youth policy document.

The development of the policy was linked to the advocacy and renewed commitment to youth development following the Governor's participation at the United Nations 2025 (UN25), where the importance of deliberate and comprehensive youth policies was emphasized.

The conveners further highlighted the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) towards this year's International Youth Day activities and the broader efforts to promote meaningful youth participation and development.

The summit also featured an engaging interactive session between the youth and the representative of the Executive Governor. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, express concerns and contribute their perspectives on issues affecting young people in Benue State. The session provided a valuable avenue for direct engagement between government and the youth constituency.

As an Association committed to community service, advocacy and the holistic development of young people, BEMSA-National commends the Benue State Government led by Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia and all stakeholders involved in the development of the Benue Youth Policy 2025–2030. We recognize the importance of policies that address the educational, health, economic, social and developmental needs of young people and look forward to opportunities for meaningful youth participation in their implementation.

INVITATION TO THE GRAND COMMEMORATIVE EVENT

The activities will culminate in a grand event at IBB Square tomorrow, bringing together young people from across the State to celebrate their strength, resilience, creativity and potential.

All members of BEMSA-National are warmly encouraged to attend and participate in this historic gathering. The event promises to be an opportunity not only to commemorate International Youth Day but also to demonstrate the collective strength, unity and capacity of the youth of Benue State.

BEMSA-National remains committed to supporting initiatives that place young people at the centre of development and will continue to engage constructively with government and relevant stakeholders towards building a healthier, more empowered and prosperous generation.
