No. Exogenous ochronosis (EO) is not caused only by skin-lightening products.
While the strongest and most common cause is prolonged use of hydroquinone-containing products, it can also develop from other substances or factors that repeatedly damage pigment metabolism in the skin.
What exactly causes exogenous ochronosis?Exogenous ochronosis develops when certain chemicals are applied to the skin repeatedly over a long period.
These chemicals are thought to interfere with the normal breakdown of tyrosine metabolites in the skin, leading to the accumulation of a blue-black or yellow-brown ochronotic pigment within the dermis.
