BLOATING:
Bloating is a common, often temporary, feeling of fullness, tightness, or swelling in the abdomen, frequently caused by excess gas, constipation, or diet.
It can cause stomach pain, excessive burping, or rumbling. Treatment includes dietary changes, fiber, exercise, and reducing gas triggers. Persistent symptoms may indicate underlying conditions like IBS.
COMMON CAUSES
1.Dietary Choices: High-sodium foods, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage), beans, lentils, and fizzy drinks.
2.Eating Habits: Eating too fast, swallowing air, or chewing gum.
3.Conditions: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, coeliac disease, or food intolerances (e.g., lactose).
4.Hormonal Changes: Menstruation-related water retention.
5.Artificial Sweeteners: Sorbitol or fructose in sugar-free products.
SYMPTOMS OF BLOATING
A. A feeling of fullness or tightness in the stomach.
Visible abdominal distension (belly looks bigger).
B. Abdominal pain or cramps.
C. Increased flatulence and burping.
D. Stomach rumbling.
RISK FACTORS
A. Dietary: High fat, high sodium, or high fiber intake, or lack of water.
B. Medical Issues: Chronic constipation or chronic digestive disorders like IBS.
C. Lifestyle: Physical inactivity (walking/exercise helps digestion).
D. Gender: More common in women, especially during menstruation.
TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT
A. Dietary Adjustments: Reduce high-gas foods, cut down on salt, and keep a food diary to identify triggers.
B. Physical Activity: Gentle movement like walking can help release trapped gas.
C. Hydration: Drink plenty of water.
D. Behavioral Changes: Eat smaller, more frequent meals; eat slowly; and avoid using straws.
E. Remedies: Peppermint tea, ginger, or OTC remedies to reduce gas.
