EPISODE 6

For two days, Shade didn't go out. She would cry, sleep and cry again.
What made the matter worse was the fact that she had no one she could call. Not even her mother.

She felt alone and unseen. She began to doubt her existence.

Paulina on the other hand received a proper treatment while at home.
Her parents tried taking up the matter but she begged them not to because Wilson had warned them not to.

She called Shade, but she didn't pick up. Worried, she feared the worst might have happened to her. She informed her parents about Shade, but they dismissed it since she herself hadn't recovered well. She called one of Shade's coursemates to help check on her.

On the third day, Grace, one of Shade's hostel mates, noticed that she hadn't seen Shade for the past three days.

Normally, if Shade won't be around for some days, she would inform Grace about it but Grace realised that Shade didn't inform her that she will be travelling.

She decided to check on her door to see if it was locked. On getting there, she realised it wasn't locked. She knocked on the door but got no response. She thought she might be sleeping. She tried for more than three times but she got no response.
On the second day which makes it the fourth day that Shade had not come out, Grace went back to knock on her door still, she got no response. She kept on knocking but Shade didn't answer.

She decided to keep her ear so close to the door to see if she could hear any movement in the room and fortunately for her, she heard a faint whisper of cry from the room.

She banged hard on the door consistently while calling out her name.

“Shade, please open this door,” Grace shouted. She kept on with this for a while but when she realised that Shade wouldn't open the door for her, she went to inform other hostel members of what was happening in the lodge.

Thankfully, they followed her to Shade's door. They kept on banging on the door hoping that Shade would open.

“Are you sure someone is inside here?” someone asked.

“Yes, someone is there,” Grace answered.

Shade was already getting tired of how they kept banging at her door because this has increased the intensity of her headache.

“Please, you all should leave me alone,” Shade managed to speak up from inside with her cracked voice as one could barely hear her.

Grace became a little bit relieved hearing her voice and this also confirmed that she is truly inside.

“Shade please, open this door. What is going on there?” Grace said pleading.

Those who came around to help Grace started leaving one by one since they were sure that the person inside was fine.

Grace waited by the door hoping that Shade would open the door.

Ten minutes later, she opened the door and she found Grace sitting by the door.

On Monday, I talked about God’s faithfulness and showing gratitude.

I have this to say today.

When we begin to show gratitude to God, we begin to see the beauty embedded within us.

We begin to see that we are not just randomly created, but we are fearfully and wonderfully made with purpose. And we begin to see through God’s eyes.

Gratitude on its own is not just a random thing that we need to do, but it must be a part of us.

I saw a post recently where someone was saying, "Why do we have to praise God when we are struggling?" I was like, what?

See ehn, there is a lot to praise God for.

Is it His faithfulness, His kindness, His love, and His mercy that have kept us all through?

I tell you, there is a lot to give praise for.

Look inwards, look outwards, and see that God has done more than you could ever imagine.

So, be grateful always and be thankful.

EPISODE 5

Shade prayed silently with no hope in her heart.
“God save us,” Shade whispered with tears streaming down her face.

Just then, Wilson and one of the guys tied them both to a chair and tortured them.

After a few minutes, Wilson ordered them to stop and he instructed them to get down with both Paulina and Shade.

The guys took their turns, Wilson taking the last.

Both Paulina and Shade were both tired with life almost leaving them.

They couldn't find tears anymore.

They then untied them.

“We've only given you a taste of our wickedness,” Wilson said.

“Release them and let them go,” Wilson said.

“And if you dare report us, we will bring you and your family down,” he added.

“But we don't know our way round here,” Paulina said, trembling.

“One of my guys will drop you,” Wilson said with disdain.

“Thank you,” Paulina said with hope in her eyes.

Shade on the other hand was so weak. She couldn't say anything; she was looking at how things evolved.

Nevertheless, she was thankful that they weren't killed.
In the evening around 5pm, one of the guys came out to drop them off. Both Paulina and Shade managed to drag themselves to the car in pain.

The guy dropped them and thankfully, it was very close to the school premises.

They stood for some minutes without talking to each other.
Fortunately, they saw two bike men coming towards their side.
They stopped them and Paulina made sure she paid for Shade's transport fare and they departed to their different destination.

Paulina, when she got to her hostel, called her parents immediately to narrate what happened to her and they had to come pick her for treatments.

Shade on the other hand, when she got to her hostel, crashed on the bed and cried.
She wished she didn't follow Paulina. She wished her mother had enough to train her in school. She wished she wasn't at the mercy of anyone.

She cried bitterly and a deep sense of resentment toward Paulina welled up inside her.

She hated her for always manipulating her ways into hers.

“Well, I can't blame her. She has what I don't have and she always uses that as a bait to persuade me to do her wish,” Shade said to herself, sighing.

For some time now, I have been feeling indifferent about gratitude.

There are times I just feel like, "What is there to be grateful about?" and this has been so because of certain circumstances and issues I have gone through.

For the past few weeks in church, we have been talking about witnesses, and the subtopic we’ve been treating is "Witnesses of God’s Faithfulness."

What has stood out for me was that we are a testimony of God’s faithfulness.

In every situation, I began to understand that God is in it. Even in the little things, God is there.

We may be thinking that God has not really done anything significant, but He has done a lot that we may not see or understand.

In every situation, we must know that God is faithful. He has always been faithful.

So therefore, we must learn gratitude, as this is an essential part of our Christian life.

If we are ungrateful in the little things, we may not see the big things that the Lord has done. Our eyes may be blinded to them.

Learn to grateful in every situation and circumstances you find yourself.

EPISODE 4

The atmosphere in the room became tense.

The other two guys handed Wilson a cigarette to light, and smoke filled the room.

Just then, a guy also came out from another part of the room. Making it five of them.

Wilson and one of the guys named Winnie pushed both Paulina and Shade to the center of the living room so hard.

Shade couldn't take the smoke coming from the cigarette anymore as she coughed hard.

“Can you please stop the cigarette?” Shade said, breathing hard.

“Who is this?” Wilson asked angrily.
“You dey my villa, you dey tell me wetin I suppose do?” Wilson said furiously.
One of the guys shoved Shade roughly. She fell to the ground, and Paulina flinched.

She wished she had listened to Shade as she regretted her actions. She wished she hadn't persuaded her.

“Calm down guys. Let's respect her wishes. Stop smoking for now. Open the curtains.” One of the guys who seemed to be the leader said.
They put off the light on the cigarette and opened the windows so that fresh air could come in as instructed. They also put on the fan.

Then Wilson bent down so he could see their faces well.
“We devised a plan and I am glad you both walked into it without stress,” he said, smiling deadly.

He slowly stood up as he made a sign to other members of his gang that they all understood.

“When a rat comes into our den, what do we do?” Wilson said with a deadly look.

“We torture them and kill them.” The other members chorused.

“Yes, that is what we do, because these ones have become loose rats, and that is what we do to them.”

Both Paulina and Shade gasped with fear.

“Please, don't harm us, release us to go,” Paulina begged with hot tears streaming down her face.
Shade on the hand kept sobbing silently because at that point, she didn't know what to do.

“Even if I have suffered all my life, this shouldn't happen to me.” She thought about her mother, her siblings, her dreams. She could see everything crashing down right before her eyes. She cried harder as a gasp of regret escaped her lips.
Begging wasn't even an option for her because the Wilson they met at the club is not the one standing in front of them. The Wilson standing in front of them is now a wolf ready to tear apart anyone into pieces.

She was beginning to accept her fate that wherever it is going to end, it should.

Wilson got frustrated with Paulina's constant begging and he gave her a deafening slap.

“We no dey beg here. E no dey our dictionary,” Wilson said, fuming with intense anger.

“Guys let's get to business,” Wilson gestured to them.

I was listening to one of Brian Tracy’s podcasts with his children, and at the end of it, he said something that stood out to me. He said, "Self-esteem automatically leads to living a healthy life."

Personally, what I could deduce from this is that living a healthy life is not just about how good the food you eat or consume is. Yeah, health-wise, we are what we eat, but if you really want to live a healthy life full of confidence, you have to love yourself first.

Most people look down on themselves, thinking that they can’t amount to anything or that they can’t measure up in life because of the environment they grew up in.

And that is a blatant lie.

For you to become that confident person, you have to love yourself first.

Say it to yourself daily that you love yourself, despite what anyone may think or say.

Block out those negative voices and keep affirming that self-love until it becomes deeply rooted in your subconscious mind.

EPISODE 3

Finally, they got to Wilson's house. It was a fenced duplex painted cream.

He got down to open the gate so he could drive in.

Both Paulina and Shade got down when he drove into the compound and the beauty of the exterior that greeted them was breathtaking all thanks to the light surrounding the house which made it possible for them to have a good sight of what the surrounding looked like at that time of the night.

Shade only scanned through the compound but Paulina took her time to appreciate the work of
art and nature that was beautifully done with flowers.

Not that she hadn't seen something like it before, but she wasn't expecting anything of the sort.

“Are you married?” she asked out of curiosity.

“No, I am not,” the guy answered, chuckling.

Shade was just looking at her with a bombastic side eye.

“Please, let's go in,” the guy said.

The exterior was decorated with flowers along the pathway leading to the house.

Paulina couldn't help but admire the beauty of the exterior building. She had to stop on her track to take in the beauty before she went inside.
Immediately they entered, Paulina stopped in her tracks; she quickly went back to check the outside again, to be sure she was seeing right.

Shade, too, became confused, the sight that met them inside bore no resemblance to what they had seen outside.
The living room was left unpainted with marks across the wall.
At the right handside wall that Shade was facing, she saw a drawing that indicated that they were cult members.
She turned around to look at Paulina but she wasn't looking at her direction and there was no way she could call her attention.

Shade's fear became heightened and Paulina became more confused and curious.

“Are you sure we are still in the same compound we saw outside?” Paulina asked.
“Yes, you are. Welcome to my humble abode,” the guy said, smiling mischievously.
A wave of cigarette smoke passed through both Paulina and Shade’s nose.

Just then, two guys came out from one of the rooms smoking.

“How far, guy? You don come back?” one of the guys asked Wilson in a husky voice, and it sent shivers down Shade's spine.

“Yes, I don come back,” the guy answered, and one of the guys who had come out of the room looked Paulina and Shade over from head to toe, smiling dryly.

He gave Wilson a look that was suspicious.

Just then, Wilson went to the door and bolted it.

Shade sensed this and she became more scared.
Paulina on the other hand was still trying to make sense of how the whole thing is still unraveling.

She feared that they might have entered the lion's den.

Habits are not formed overnight. It takes consistent and continuous practice before something becomes a habit.

You may have always wondered how someone was able to achieve a great feat. It is the power of habit.

You may see another person and ask, "How did they get themselves into this mess?"

It could be the power of habit.

Whether good or bad, habits begin with the little things that we do until they become a part of us.

The main essence of this is that we need to be conscious of the habits we have built over time because they are a mark of what we will become over time, whether good or bad.

And it takes conscious effort to build good habits.

Decide to build habits that will be beneficial to you, the people around you, and your society.

This is one of the ways the world can become a better place to live in.
